yup it happned, an 18mph crash into the back of a tesco van and my left collar bone is in tw bits and lifted like an unclosed draw bridge. however i have spoken to the doc and h has said its cool for me to use an in door trainer or exercise bike until i can go and play again. so my question is to all those who have broken collar bones before - what's the best thing to go for an exersize bike or a turbo? any recommendations on either would be well appreciated as i've already been off the bike for 5 days and am getting fat!
any advice welcome!

Get it and put it on ebay once the bones heal, you'll be selling just as the leaves turn brown and people plan to keep fit over winter.
Take it steady and keep riding smoothly, build up and don't force yourself if the thing isn't healing properly or is painful.0 -
Ouch. Are you just strapped up?
I'm surprised you can think about training - After doing my collarbone I was on painkillers which a) made my face go numb and b) made me go to sleep
In answer to your question I used a turbo once or twice and it was okay.Fckin' Quintana … that creep can roll, man.0 -
yeah i've got on a lancaster sling type thing which is pretty god cos the ae originally gave me the wrong sling which made the bone point up through my skin cos of the lack of support!
it's all i've been thinking about since i did it was so damn relieved to find out i was allowed to use a trainer i nearly hugged the consultant!
what type of ridung were you doing on the trainer? i was thinking of doing an hour in the mornng before work and an hour in the evening before dinner during the week then a couple of hours on sat if the girls at work asnd then a couple on sunday morning. but not beibg able to hold the bars means that maybe the rides will be pretty tame for a while?

I just tried turning my legs over. I've seen people sitting more upright when doing it so as not to put any strain on the shoulder.
But really, take it easy - I lost over 5kg's while my bones were mending and wasn't doing any exercise. The surgeon who eventually fixed my should said that it can take a lot out of you repairing bones etc.
It will also hurt for a lot longer than you think.Fckin' Quintana … that creep can roll, man.0 -
5kgs!! what were you eating? did you drop your intake at all or eat to heal?

I did my right collarbone end of sept last year, after the surgery I wasn't allowed on a bike/turbo/static bike until end of november. then only very gentle spinning. I was eventually allowed back on the road mid january. Mind you - it nearly did my dome in using the turbo 2-3 times a week for 6 weeks.

Well, I haven't broken my collar bone. I do have a turbo however I loathe it as I can't get it set up well. That's more down to me than the turbo. Many love them so give it a try I say.
Don't worry about the broken collar bone, after all, you have another one

yeah i hate the fact that i have to buy a turbo as i swore that if i was ale to ride a bike i;d be outside but needs must for the time being and my main goal is damage limitation in terms of weight gain and fitness loss - besides i'm realyy missing riding in the mornings! luckily we have big windows that open like doors in our cottage and it over looks fields so for all intents and purposes i can open the window fully strap on my ipod and pedal til my hearts content - belleville style!!
thanks for all the best wishes i'm well on the mend even after a week. more mobility and no pain so to speak so fingers crossed the turbo will be on eay before long!

Jeyclaw aka T2R guide John (he's broken his c/b too)put me onto a guy in Ipswich who has some weirdywoo magnetic&laser treatment that speeds the healing of broken bones.
I've done my wrist, and whilst it didn't seem to make a noticeable difference there and then, I was back commuting after 2.5weeks and had my first MTB ride after 4. Those 2 weeks on the turbo drove me absofookinlutely spare. What an utter waste of time and energy! (although I was staring at the wall of a shed, not a nice view of the countryside)
Brian Simpson is the guy

In the meantime a) stick your feet up and relax a little (I know you won't find it easy :? ), and b) for god's sake eat some (lots!) of your missus' cake. You do her a great disservice by not getting as much of it as possible down your neck.
Hi to Ellie and heal quick!0
