I'd rather someone was cycling in the world champs jersey than not riding at all, it's just that I respect the world champion and feel companies selling the jerseys to naive fans are cashing in. It's like selling replica Olympic medals or buying a whWorld Cup Trophy, you don't have to do it.
Im surprised you think someone buying a replica WRRC kit is somehow naive. Anyway companies sell all sorts of replica kits .............its called business.

Saying team kits are for wanabees is the same moronic mentality as saying 'Why do you wear lycra do you think you're a professional cyclist.'
I agree with the guy that said it's a typical British mentality. Footy shirts are the only sportswear allowed here.
I like the Belgian kit by the way.
I agree 100% with what you say , this typical British mentality you talk of is there for all to see in this thread

why should companies not sell world champs replica kit.
Football kit is sold with "euro champions " "fa cup finalists" etc and nobody bats an eye.
I have 2 scotland rugby tops, 1 all blacks top, 1 scotland retro argentina 1978 football top, and when prendas start doing 1984 Peugeot/shell Kom. Robert Millar jerseys I'll be first in line.
ps: I dont play football or rugby, and am a far worse mountain climber now than I was as a skinny youth. beer is heavy

Hear Hear. Good comment.
I daresay it has been talked about before but all the numpties you see wearing world champs kit make me cringe. I'm all for people wearing whatever floats theri boat, but in terms of jersies that have to be earned, wait untli you have earned them.
Does that got for all sporting jerseys or just the rainbow one, coz if its all i better get upstairs and clean out my sons wardrobe asap .............all blacks jersey, wallaby jersey, scotland football top etc etc.
cheers

Completely agree. I think people wearing team jerseys or national team jerseys as worn in world champs races is great, or any great jersey, but the world champion's rainbow jersey or national champion's jersey is different; it's not just a jersey but a prize. Only the world champion wears the world champion's jersey, for one year. That's a beautiful tradition that's unique to cycling. Of course people have the right to wear whatever they want, but a recreational cyclist wearing a world championship jersey is sacrilege, in my eyes. But sure, there's more imprtant things to worry about.0 -
Well, here it is, but only in xl and xxl.

LOL, I went out today in a mix of liquigas, cofidis, csc and banesto stuff, what must I have been thinking? I was thinking of having a good ride that's what.
Whilst I personally wouldn't go out of my way to wear world champion or polka-dot kit I'm not going to look down on anyone for cycling fullstop to do so would be prissy in my eyes.0 -
Good post. Surely we want people riding bikes and enjoying themselves as priority #1 ?
What they wear is irrelevant.
Replica team kit is cheaper in many cases, bright and attractive.
RCUK used to be full of (what I call) snobbery over what items of clothing you are allowed to wear and it strikes me as being daft.0 -
This is a great set of posts and has clearly ruffled a few feathers. There are obviously some who ride with something sharp up their bibs and yet others who either preen when on the road or who hate being seen because they are perceived to be breaking some unspoken rule.
I recently bought a replica jersey which just happens to have rainbow stripes on the cuffs  - I wanted it for the history of who wore it, not because I am a god on a bike.
Wear what you like if it makes you happy, including a polkadot (anyone notice the hordes of polkadot-wearing-clearly-not-climbers lining the roads on the tour...?). If you get stick for your particular 'fashion', take it like a hard man
I ride a Bianchi - 'Celeste' is a particularly interesting colour to co-ordinate and I hate black.....Spring!

Hmm
I often wear either a banesto or nico lapage jersey, plain black shorts, bianchi team socks.
Not sure whether it clashes or not, but it was all dirt cheap.
ooh - i almost forgot - got loads of tacky pairs of shades from herne hill jumble sale at 2 quid a go. My favourites are my big yellow framed ones - my wife says I look like a retarded insect.0 -
It looks like we'll be seeing a lot of those Letzebuerg jerseys:
Luxemburg got 9 starter positions at the World Championships, 9!! USA and GB got just 6. Of course the Schlecks, Kirchen and Joachim are (more than) decent riders and the reasn they qualified for 9, but where are they going to get the other 5 pros from??
