Very sore quadriceps

I usually do around 120miles a week, with a 20-30 mid-week ride a 30-40 mile ride Saturday and 50-60 miles on Sunday. I do a few sportives as well.

I did the Ryedale Rumble (long route) on 27th July and felt fine afterwards with no muscle soreness at all. I didn't get a chance to go out during the week last week and did a fast 40milles on Saturday afternoon over rolling terrain ,average speed 18.00mph. By late saturday there was some tightness snad discomfort in my quads. I did a bit of stretching, but probably not enough. On Sunday morning there was still some soreness, making walking downstairs slightly uncomfortable, but I managed to do 50 miles without a problem on Sunday morning.

Since Sunday afternoon my quads are very very sore, that walking is uncomfortbale and I can really feel it when sitting down or walking down the stairs.

My weeknd mileage and pace is no different from normal and my bike set up is the same as always, so why do have this muscle soreness?

Could this be a delayed effect of doing the Ryedale Rumble?

I find that if I do a hard ride and then don't touch my bike for days afterwards, my legs will feel awful the next ride. I try and do an easy "recovery ride" the day after a hard session followed by stretching etc to get the leg muscles back into some sort of working order.

sounds like delayed onset muscle soreness, can be reduced by warming down and stretching properly after every ride. I used to get it a lot after a heavy weights session, I seem to remember it is to do with the muscle healing itself and getting stronger. Ideally you'll also stretch every morning just so things don't heal short.

Actually, that sounds like you've pulled a muscle on the saturday and aggravated it on the Sunday. I did a very similar thing with my hamstring about a year ago - the "very sore" when walking is not right at all, even after a hard session. I'd see a physio.

This isn't a pulled muscle. Most of my quads on both legs, lateral, medial and anterior are tender to touch. As I said, my weekly milage is no diferent than usual. The only thing I can think that is different is I did 8.5 hours in the saddle on 27th up some bloody steep hils!

Fair enough! It does sound unusual though, given I'd expect the effects of the 27th to have worn off. Maybe not, though. Hot baths, massage, ibuprofen....
