Freewheeling - Is it cheating?

Right, no messing, I am cycling because I need to get a bit fitter. OK, a *lot* fitter. Never mind the fact that I sneakily enjoy it as well...
I go out (like today) for a 20 mile ride and (even here in Norfolk) there are hills along the route. Given that I am supposed to be *exercising* first, enjoying second, is it considered cheating to freewheel down the hills I just pedalled up on the way out?

I'd say it depends on the speeds you're getting up to descending. Anything where I can still pedal at a comfortable cadence I go for, but long descents where you're approaching 40mph + I don't bother with as I tend to spin out."A cyclist has nothing to lose but his chain"

Exactly. Think it is speed based. If you are freewheeling along at 6mph, then pedal. If you are decsending at 30mph+ then it is discretionary...Rich0

Cool 8) It's the ones where I *could* -if I went to the longest gear I have - keep up, but then I'd have to go all the way around the gears again up the other side!

its only cheating if you get a lift to the top like those lazy downhill mountain bikers, but since we work our way up the hilsl it isnt cheating.
ps. sorry mtbers im only joking0 -
I think it's always a good idea to keep your legs turning, even if just a bit.0

I like to pedal down hills to get the fastest speeds, no hill been long enough for me to get over 40+ really before, mainly coz I'm scared .
I went downa hill at 41mph today and decided not to change gear to see how fast I was spinning and I was spinning at about 167RPM.0
