spd cleat position and hot spots

I'm commuting about 16 miles a day using SPDs and my mountain bike shoes...
I'm finding that the outside of my foot sole is getting 'hot' and numb when I'm commuting, and would be interested in any suggestions... i've been using SPDs for ages and i've done the "sit on a side board and let your feet dangle" so i'm fairly happy with the angle...
Does this have something to do with why the forward/backwards cleat position is different on road shoes as to mountain bike shoes?
Thanks in advance.

Hi there.
It's probably more to do with having a small cleat... Road pedals (e.g. Look Keo) have bigger cleats that spread the load over a wider area. Stiffer soled shoes (carbon) also help to eliinate hot spots.
