Here we go. The racing in mental so far, the bunch is splitting in two as they go along the relatively flat valley roads, every rider desperate to get in a break like the last one to Prato Nevoso.

I hope there is a selection made on the first climb. CSC need to duff over Cadel and Menchov early to get a lot of time into them.

Schumacher could get a bit lonely quick, on this first climb.
A sad bunch on such a stage.

Mistake by Lotto to leave KAA and Jens up the road in that big bunch.

I agree, but for different reasons. Just like to see the top 6 (+Valverde) duking it out. Not such a specticle when the top guys ride as a group until the last climb of the day.

FWIW, I think today will be less explosive early on, whilst tomorrow we could see some fireworks from the off.

But they sent Popovych to mark Arvesen and Voigt...

If CSC have those 2 up the road, having Popo there isn't that helpful.

Sastre and Schlecks put the pressure on early, maybe drop Evans. They then ride up to Jens / KAA who works through valley and off they go on next climb. Not many people are going to help Cadel.

Indeed. The perfect tactic is to place Voigt uphead, he stays in radio contact and when needed, he can tow Sastre or Schleck along.

As long as Evans manages to lose 2 minutes over the next two days I'll be very happy. Should make for a very interesting time trial.

Stuey was obviously one of the three not tested by CONI, then.
It may not be the fastest pace, but he's still putting a lot of hurt into the French.
I wonder if he can drop Valverde!

What's that, Astarloza for the stage win?

Monfort is currently threatening my white jersey bet  Get a move on Vincenzo!

Popo seems.....erm......rejuvenated. These groups are all over the mountain, waiting for the CSC hoover to be switched on.

Cunego, even with top domestique, SS, seems to be going nowhere.

Nice to see Stefan Schumacher going for it. I wonder if anyone thinks he's riding clean, now, after Gerolsteiner grassed up that dodgy Spanish lab, to WADA?

He's gained 3 minutes on the peloton so far though? If the peloton isnt going that fast then it makes sense for someone like him to be out in front if he's going at a comfortable pace (i assume his team mate is making the pace). If he's in the main group when the power goes on then he will probably be straight out the back. I think that is why people like Valjavec and Monfort are there too. Doesnt mean they wont be caught half way up the next climb though/

Big gap for Schumacher at 4 minutes but then itr is a long climb and there are a lot of people behind. Not sure who the best climber is - Zubeldia if he is on form or maybe Siutso. I think big George and Amets Txurruka will try to build the pace for them at the bottom of the next climb.

Harmon and Kelly batting the commentary back and forth as they eat their lunch - excellent! What's happened to Emma?

Even Jeff Abbot agrees with me

We have more mail, and Jeff Abbot knows who is going to win today "I think Hincapie is going to be the stage victor today. He is a strong rider and problems wants to prove he is still a man to be feared.
Columbia/High Road are having a great tour and old George does love the mountains. A close second will be the CSC duo of Voigt and Arvesen. Kurt already had one stage win and will probably be looking to help out the team get another and continue to secure the overall top team."
