Stephen Roche just said it's Piepoli. Eurosport lawyers have a fit.

Hardly a surprise! Maybe it's the sound of Eurosport head honchos celebrating as they realise Big Sean won't have to grapple with the guy's surname any more!

CFA have a piece on this now... Looks like SD are also about to lose sponsorship
  • Who needs enemies when your potential missus makes comments like that! It's one thing to defend your boyfriend (and lamely blame someone else) but to claim that it was conspiracy against Pantani also?? Oh dear.

Aye - But what do we make of David Millar saying Mauro Gianetti is a good guy?

Hmmm - probably feels a bit of loyalty after the guy gave him a job

I think we'd question Millar's ability to judge someone's character?

Gianetti is a bad egg. He was a dope fiend when he was a rider and he's carried that into his career as a team manager.

For someone who's been right in the middle of it for so long, Millar can come across as incredibly naive. When Vino was busted last year, he went into a state of shock, whereas most folk on here were taking the "No sh!t, Sherlock" attitude...

Gianetti almost died when he was using an experimental doping process. Google "gianetti pfc" for yourself, although Gianetti tried to sue the doctor, saying he wasn't aware of what was going on. This is common, that many riders just accept the injections, they don't even realise that EPO is a dangerous medicine that comes with health warnings and is only suitable for people already at death's door.

I guess its hard for Miller to be as detached as we are.
Its not like us - we never met the guy - he's lived with him for a year or two hasnt he ?

C'mon, Dwain Chambers had to ask whassisname-from-Balco to give him a list of what he was on and what it was for, so he could give it to UKAthletics.
Dwain may or may not be as thick-as-two-short-planks as he appears, but he clearly had no idea what he was taking or why - he obviously knew it was illegal doping but otherwise just took the pills/injections that he was given with no clue what they did, side effects, etc.

(- I'm guessing they don't come with those little leaflets in the packet giving possible side-effects, e.g. paracetamol might give you headaches, or might give you diarrhoea and/or make you constipated, etc  )

108km - BREAKING NEWS! Italians Leonardo Piepoli and Riccardo Ricco have been sacked from the Saunier Duval team for "doping practices", the team said on Friday. "(Team manager) Mauro Gianetti has lost faith in them and he decided to fire them from the team," David Garcia, a spokesman for Saunier Duval, told Reuters. Big news! We knew Ricco had tested positive, but we did not know what Piepoli's situation was. "They have been fired for doping practices," is the word from Saunier Duval.

NIMES, France, July 18 (Reuters) - Italians Leonardo Piepoli and Riccardo Ricco were kicked out of the Saunier Duval cycling team on doping grounds, the team said on Friday.
"(Team manager) Mauro Gianetti has lost faith in them and he decided to fire them from the team," David Garcia, a spokesman for Saunier Duval, told Reuters.
It was announced on Thursday that Ricco tested positive for the blood-boosting drug EPO on the fourth stage of this year's Tour de France. Piepoli and the rest of the team were subsequently withdrawn.
"(Gianetti) did a personal investigation and consequently lost faith in Ricco but also in Piepoli because of a violation of the team's ethics code," Saunier Duval said in a statement.
"As a result, Mauro Gianetti immediately fired these two riders."

Interesting he didn't fire Cobo... maybe the lad just got himself a stage win!
  • Looks like Gianetti's desperately trying to hang on to the sponsors.

If you looked at Cobo vs Piepoli at that finish - Piepoli didnt even have his mouth open, but Cobo was gasping for air like a dying fish ?

It's obvious who got the lion's share of the gear at the breakfast table that day then!

I was skeptical about her/her father's reaction when I read that in La Gazzetta yesterday. Isn't she Italian cycloscross champion btw?

Even Ligget and Sherwin have hinted that more bad news will be given over the weekend.

Aye, they are worse than Steve Cram when it comes to sticking ones head firmly in the sand when it comes to doping.

Hmm - I'd imagine she may get an extra test or too this season then.
