It was quiet - utilising my 100% waterproof outer covering of "skin" I came to work without dissolving....

Here's an observation are the red overbanding lines the most slippy?

One singlie done this morning and one who drafted me from Parliament Sq to Blackfriars....

Had a chat with God last night and he's forgiven me

...Greg, I like your style 8)

...I really like riding in the rain...and when the BBC weather people tell me to "stay in" and "drive carefully during the morning rush hour", it makes me want to get out there and ride and get wet...

  • I suspect the deafening silence from the rest of us is an admission of guilt (and shame) at being fair weather cycle commuters.
Never be tempted to race against a Barclays Cycle Hire bike. If you do, there are only two outcomes. Of these, by far the better is that you now have the scalp of a Boris Bike.

Yup, and I feel no shame.
  • I do have an excuse as I'm going drinking after work tonight (just about to leave) but I don't expect any of you to buy that. Just lucky coincidence that I missed the pleasure of the rain today.

But, back on the bike tomorrow, come rain or shine (or hangover).

Well I cycled home tonight and it was - well wet..

The worst bit was putting my still wet and cold shorts back on - ack.

If you didn't get on the bike 'cos it was raining - and you have showers at work - well you need to have a chat with the man in shaving mirror and tell him he's agreat big girly man .

As Charles Evans, one of the first successful Everest team said, in one of my favourite quotes: "It's always worth making a start".

It's amazing the number of times that making a start cycling, in the hills, etc when first thoughts are to stay indoors results in something fine that you are glad you didn't miss and will remember for a long time.

More prosaically, if you stay indoors when it rains in the UK you'll never do anything.

I cycled - resembled a drowned rat when I reached work, but a grin from ear to ear :)
(said grin vanished when I had to put my soggy shorts back on to come home this evening though...!)

There i was soaked to the skin, flying past the much-heavier-than-usual traffic thinking "I'm glad i'm not stuck in these queues" when i noticed a number of pitying faces staring back at me through steamed up windows. No idea why...

How do these people wash themselves without getting wet?!

Get the same when surfing in Winter.

It's only water and it soon dries out. And it's fun.

Got caught out on Saturday...light rain was fun, heavy rain was really, erm wet? But I think the worst bit about cycling in the rain, is waiting and junctions, lights and crossings....standing there being pe'd on from above and there's nothing you can do, but stand there in squelchy shoes!

I quite like that - I put on my best "this rain to me is nothing - I am above physical discomfort and nails - if it were raining liquid Nitrogen I MIGHT wear long fingered gloves." 1,000 yard stare and sit very tall.

It scares the drivers and makes me feel good.

Am I just strange? I really enjoyed yesterday! I went for my usual baggies, plus a light-weight waterproof jacket and was having a whale of a time (literally!)

    The only downsides were
    1) The massive puddle covered with a thick slick of diesel and with cars immediately to my right. No, I wasn't going to stop for it, but it was just yuck. Put my shoes through the washing machine when I got home.
    2) Putting on wet shorts, socks and shoes for the way home - never fun, but soon get over it.

The lighter cycling traffic certainly makes the commute quicker and I can't say the rain really bothers me, as long as I'm warm (almost too warm in the waterproof but it's a godsend at the start).

I cycled yesterday. First time in ages I've cycled both ways in the rain. I thought it was rather nice plinky plonky rain. No wind, not particularly heavy, nice and warm.

Why do so many cyclists wear so much clothing? Surely they must get wetter from perspiration than from the rain.

I gave it the soggy kitten look, then the morning after fart has made it to my nostrils and I think I might be dying face. Then I set off in trail of steam...and the realisation that months and months of the sweat from my hat, which may or may not protect me in the even of a crash, was running down my face, and really doesn't taste nice!!!

This always reminds me of being a kid and swimming in my Grandad's pool. At lunchtime we had to get out and get changed into normal clothes and then were forced to wait for at least an hour after lunch before being allowed back in the pool.

That hour always took so long to pass!

Anyway, I am always reminded of the sensation of putting back on cold wet trunks when I put on cold wet shorts....

    Happy Days! :D

Concentrated Ming running down my face, stinging my eyes and tasting like defeat in my mouth. Ack Ack Ack.

I didn't wear my customary lid yesterday and wore a baseball cap (not little bike cap all you adjusters) as lid ming is rank and I was experimenting with the effect of cap on visibility in the rain = it worked well actually - keeps the rain out of your eyes..

I washed my helment pads (!) and gloves last night - they were beginning to offend me and anyone nearby.

    Nice and fresh today :D

Had to put my mudguard back on though - not good at this time of year.

Speaking of getting soaked, does anyone know of some good trainer-type shoes that will fit into toe-clips and keep relatively dry on the inside?

I'd have to say on the days I'm caught in the rain I generally enjoy it! After all as many people have already stated - it's only water and once you've been outside for 10 minutes in the rain you can't get much wetter!

The worse bit for me tho is my glasses getting soaked, so I then can't see where I'm going :-)

I would have to say tho that the feeling of riding in the rain, when your just not worried how wet you get is great, that and the looks you get from peds and other road users make's it rather fun for me, I once got caught out with no waterproofs so had to make do with my normal cycling gear - not sure if people expect someone in shorts and a sleeveless t to wear such a huge smile when it raining :-)
