I'm not sure if this'll turn out to be the best place to post this, but a heads up for The Science of Lance Armstrong is on ITV 4 on Monday 7th July (2008) at 8 pm.

Bugger, the link doesn't take you to the actual page, but the blurb says:

Will definitely tape it - out tonight. The race across America programme was a bit of a let down. It just wasn't a very well made documentray. It just didnt give any background to the race and wasn't well edited. Hope this one is better!

I've not seen the programme, and i think it's great if such sports science type programmes are on TV. However, and i don't know if this is an error in the magazine or the actual TV programme, but it's highly unlikely that his lung capacity is double that of an average mans. It wouldn't make much/any difference even if it was. I suspect that what is actually meant is that his VO2max is double that of an average man (i.e., his VO2max is ~ 80 - 90 mL/kg/min).

On holidays so missed this one. Just checked out ITV4 andI see it is on tonight at 8pm for anyone that missed it and doesn't want to watch it on their computer.
  • I was correct! They were talking about VO2max, not lung capacity!

There was an article in the new scientist archives which i don't seem to be able to find atm, as i can't view those.

But apperently, the loss of one of his testicles gave him an advantage as well, due to a change in the balance of hormones released. If i remember rightly, the amount of testosterone remained constant, however, he produced more of another hormone which had the job of recovering the body or something like that. If anybody is a subscriber of New Scientist maybe you could look it up.
