Injury crisis

Any advice?!?!?!?

I can only cycle for about 6 miles when I get a really sharp pain to the right of my spine at my shoulder blade. It's like someone sticking a hot knife into my back. When I stop it subsides in 2 or 3 minutes and then I can carry on for another 6 miles or so when I have to stop due to the pain. This has been happening since I did the Highclere 200k a couple of weeks ago. I've been to an osteopath a few times but I'm pretty sure they are barking up the wrong tree as the exercises they have me doing are targeting a different section of my back and there's been no improvement in a fortnight!! This is driving me crazy as I usually cycle around 180 miles a week and I've only managed 50 miles in a 2 weeks!!! It can't be bike setup as I've done around 6000 comfortable miles on the bike already.

If anybody has had a similar injury please advise before I go loopy!!

BTW, there is no pain when I do anything else, only cycling. This is making me think that it may be something to do with the pressure on my hands rather than an actual back injury.

Sounds like a muscle going into spasm - I had something similar in my shoulders / neck which came on suddenly - a couple of treatments from a physio including acupunture eased it a lot.

Short answer, if you don't think the osteopath is doing any good, see another physio / osteopath, preferably one who specialises in sports injuries.

get yourself down to Dr Michael Lanning at the Gonsteads Clinic: 0207 637 2920.

Dr Lanning is a Chiropractor, cyclist and contributor to Cycling Weekly, and has sorted my neck and shoulder problems a treat.
  • It need not be muscular... could be referred pain from a stomach or gall bladder complaint. Or is this only happening on the bike? You need to be seen by a physician - and not get worried by what people on forums write.

It only happens on the bike, although I did an hour on the turbo trainer with no pain. I'm starting to suspect that it may be my courier bag that is causing it.
