Does anyone have any ideas/tips on what else you could wrap your bars in apart from bar tape and the other costly 'cycle-specific' products out there - I'm thinking cheap or free and things that might be lying around the house/shed/tip/attic......

why dont you leave them bare and wrap your hands in bar tape ?0

I use squash racket handle grips. Its got a very sticky strip on the back so it doesn't move and its still very grippy when your hands are sweaty, plus it is far more padded than regular handle bar tape.0

Inner tube idea sounds interesting - sort of thing you'd see on some courier's bike.
Surely rolls of Elastoplast works out more expensive than real bar tape?0 -
Electrical tape works sort of alright. You could also use Velox rim tape (which is a lot like the Velox Tressostar cloth bar tape).0

How much is bar tape? A tenner max? Seems hardly worth scrimping and saving for that little an amount.0

It's nothing to do with scrimping and saving - it's a bit of fun!www.practicalcycles.com

How about string or there is always clingfilm!0

I like the idea of string - might give it a go!
Condoms?.... as long as they are ribbed for extra grip!!www.practicalcycles.com

Bit like traditional-style cricket bat/hockey stick handles, maybe?
I think this thread also has scope for much Viz Top Tips-style silliness (my 2p worth - old ties knocking about in the wardrobe that you don't wear any more?)!

Ahhh Viz top tips - "bloody cyclists - save money on handlebar tape by chopping off your hands" might be the sort of thing they would have 'sent in'.www.practicalcycles.com

Slide lots of pairs of mountain bike grips onto the bar. Extra points for non-matching colours.0

You can buy the whole cow cheaper than the Brooks bar covering though!www.practicalcycles.com

Its different to the brooks stuf.

Faux fur?
Why stop at the handlebars? How cool would it look to do the whole bike.0 -
Studded leather or snakeskin.
And I really want to see the results when you do choose something!0 -
I'd go with marzipan - that way when you're "chewing the bars" in a road race you get a snack to keep you going and it tastes better than cork ribbon too0

Or for something savoury, how about your preferred favourite cooked meat [1] (corned beef, garlic sausage, ham, etc.)?
