Getting prepared for a bit of a hill climb this morning, stood out of saddle & heard a ping from the chain area, as the chain skipped.
unbalanced, I wrenched my back trying to avoid groin and cross bar meeting. Just been to inspect the bike during lunch time, and it turns out I appear to have ripped out a tooth from the big chainring. tw@t

Had to ask for rescue wagon this morning - struggled to get the socks on but thought a pootle ride would loosen the back.
Managed 3/4 of a mile before giving up :(
    Owch.

1 week later, and i'm spending the day mostly lying in bed as walking hurts like hell, and standing up from sitting in a chair takes about 20 minutes. Owch.
I thought this cycling malakery was supposed to be healthy?

My new pet hate is people posting screenshots from Zwift on Strava.

What goes through people's minds then they do this?

Am I supposed to be impressed by a sunset or a digitised picture of someone on a bike? Do you really need to share something so mundane that anyone could produce? All the pictures are completely dull and generic. Some people's picture feeds are just pic after pic of boring Zwift screenshots.

I like looking at the pictures people have taken of rides but for the love of God, please spare me with tedious Zwift screenshots. Dull, dull, dull and clogging up my activity feed.

Zwift does that by itself. They aren't choosing to upload those screenshots.

Had no idea, what a crappy feature, how come some are of a bike and others are of scenery then, it just grabs random shots?

getting fed up of the number of dangerously close passes I seem to getting on my commute lately, these arent the ones that just pass within that 0.75 metre gap, these are ones that are so close you instinctively flinch or even grab at your handle bars to steer or brake away from to feel that you have to avoid being clobbered.

I dont feel Im riding any differently, and its weirdly something Im not noticing at all on weekend rides, only on commutes, and Im not even swearing or going full on WTF are you doing style reacting when it happens, its just seems lately that cars are diving for every tiny gap that opens up even if there isnt a car size gap there, even when the road ahead is then immediately blocked by a red light.

I had an example tonight, red light, traffic is already queuing for it, Im lining up to be prime behind the car in front as I know its going to be a minute before we go green and I dont want to go to the head of the queue, theres only a 2 car length gap ahead of me,and this car from behind just shoves their bonnet ahead of me and then just pulls in, so I either get out their way or get hit, I had to escape into the left turn lane that fortunately no-one was using. I did then go and sit right on their front quarter and stared my best paddington stare at them whilst they did that "pretend theres no-one there stare ahead" thing.

but thats just one example from this week, tonights ride home had that, a left hook, 2 mopeds who buzzed me at another set of lights, white van close pass, another car who close passed and then brake tested me, and those are only the ones I can remember.

its making riding quite stressful at the moment

Driver considerately sounded his horn to let me know that he was about to overtake and cut across my lane to turn left (just barely) in front of me. c0ckbobbin.

Getting more and more nutters shouting at me with the "you should use the cycle lane", despite there being no reasonable routes anywhere near my commute. There is one CS in my part of London and it does not go where I need to be everyday, so I use the road like any other road user.

I used to reply with a 'what law am i breaking, why aren't you on the M25?' - but honestly no real point engaging these morons, they are almost exclusively males in vans or buses who have failed in life.

I fear this is a result of the segregated 'superhighways' and PR BS from Tfl.

I fear this is a result of the segregated 'superhighways' and PR BS from Tfl.

This is one of my major objections to cycle lanes in general - cyclists are expected to use them - without regard for whether or not they are suitable for use - eg in construction, length or direction of travel.

I've been shouted at for not using a cycle path on my commute (rural A road) - despite the fact that it's shared use, on the opposite side of the carriageway, the dips are filled with muck & water and the whole thing is 0.6 miles long - riding the road usually takes me about 2 minutes to complete - on the path it would be at least 3 minutes - depending on the joggers & walkers I come across ...

Another of my other objections is that (where I am anyway) - cycle paths have lowest priority on the road - at any squeeze point or junction - the path either disappears or is directed away from the most direct path of travel.

So I don't bother using them at all - I'm traffic - along with the rest of the vehicles ... stuffem!

    Dogs in the workplace.

Guy brings his dog to work today because his dog sitter has let him down. Then effs off to France for 5 days on business leaving it in the care of the receptionist who then proceeds to start chopping up the little gits food on the staff kitchen counter.

No effing dogs near me or in the work environment for effs sake. I hate dogs vehemently.

If you can't look after your pet because of your job, don't have one and certainly don't bring it to work.

Three days into the week and I've started at three different times: Monday was my usual 2pm , Tuesday was 10 am and today 9am. Only bonus is being home to watch London six day on Eurosport when I'm not asleep on the sofa.
I've added a signature to prove it is still possible.

More things to add from the last few days:
    • Real estate agents' cars parked on the bike lane
    • Drivers speeding past me when I'm already at 19 mph and approaching a narrowing, chopping back into lane in front of me. Usually, these moves can be predicted from a mile, thankfully. Last time this happened, the lady driver had to stop 50m later on a traffic light (obviously). When politely told what she did wrong, her reply was "Who, me? What? Chop you? Oh really?" Which brings me to...
    • People that handle their cars unaware of their surroundings and the weight of their machines
    • Drivers that speed past you right after a traffic light, and then turn left superquick, without using an indicator, potentially left-hooking the poor, innocent, and ruggedly handsome cyclist (me)
    • Drivers that, whenever they see a bike ahead, feel the need to pass it at all costs, no matter the situation, no matter the speed, and no matter the location. Even when they'd be perfectly happy to wait if the vehicle were a car.
  • Cyclists

When I am a pedestrian - Nearly mowed down my some twonk on a road bike (in full Lycra) who decided that traffic lights don't apply to him, or pedestrian crossings...at least the other idiot on MTB that jumped the lights gave the pedestrians some room (and wasn't wearing Lycra).

They really do give the rest of us a bad name...and will result in things like number plates etc.

    This.

Particularly when you are keeping up with traffic and there is no space between you and the car in front.

  • Having occasionally been on the receiving end of the horn of a car following me (when driving myself) because I slow down behind a cyclist and wait for a suitable gap to overtake, I almost carved up a cyclist this morning... because he pulled out right in front of me.
I saw him approaching the junction to the road I was driving along and he simply chose not to stop / wait. As there was another car coming the other way I could not simply pull put around him, so had to haul anchor rather sharply (fortunately able to do so, as I've been on the wrong end of cars pulling out on me as if I don't exist so half-anticipate this sort of thing anyway).
This had me thinking - had there been no time for me to stop I would have squeezed between him and the approaching car, leaving him next to no space as I passed. Would he have then taken offence to that?

Di2 is going to be the bane of my fucking life.

Yesterday I spent far too long trying to fix the firmware on the EW-111 wireless connector after a random disconnection part way through the original update. Wireless wouldn't work because the firmware was busy and physical connection wouldn't work because it needed to be fixed wirelessly.

Anyway, all fixed, all the other firmware are updated and I've configured for the rings / cassette I'm using.

This morning I plan a sunny first ride of the bike. Few laps of RP to make sure everything is in order.

Di2 is completely unresponsive. No lights, no gear changes, nuthin'.

Disconnect and reconnect battery. Still nowt.

It's a beautiful morning out there and I'm in a huff.

Bluddy close pass this morning - just as well I didn't move out around a stone/hole - luckily the f^ckwit BMW was only doing 30mph vs my 20 ... my Aldi cam caught the incident - now, with a clear numberplate - do I bother to see if the Police want the footage?

Well - OperationCrackdown is operating in our area - easy online reporting with the ability to link to a dropbox video. http://www.operationcrackdown.org/

The driving wasn't agressive - which is just as worrying because it means the driver probably didn't consider what they were doing was dangerous - hopefully the driver will get a warning which should mean they consider where they're driving in future!

the thing is though, and I had one of those the other week where Im still thinking how did they not hit me, but I cant be bothered with the hassle, you report it, you have to give a statement and talk to the police and all that nonsense, and 9/10 times nothings going to come of it. Im just I dunno, its like whats the point ?

yup - I know the feeling - it's got to be worth the hassle - well - they seem to have made it easier here - you can post your report online and include video evidence if you have it - via Youtube, dropbox or OneDrive - they just request that the video is kept private - which I have done for now.
They'll probably do nothing about this one - however, they'll keep an eye on the number of reports for this vehicle - I assume there is a threshold overwhich they'll take some action.

It didn't take long to submit and I assume if they want a formal statement from me then they'll do something for this case - so it would make it worth while. If not - then it's just a little time lost from my part.
I wouldn't have bothered if I didn't have the video as evidence.

I was going to suggest opCrackdown, and I understand that Sussex Road Policing unit have performed a Close Pass thing in conjunction with Hants RPU last week - I've had friends "over the border" state that they've had NIP's issued from Crackdown.

Can only wish I had it in Hampshire - I've got 2 this morning on a 40mph road were the wing mirror was less than a foot from my handlebars - caught on rear camera, but not helmet camera.
Going to have to report both to 101, which'll take about an hour just to get through :(

Quick Update - it's worked for my case anyway - they've said they've sent a formal letter to the registered keeper of the vehicle - apparently they looked at it for prosecution but decided to just do the letter - which TBH I wasn't expecting anything more than a warning (unless the driver had repeatedly been reported). So good result - thanks Sussex Police ...

Managed to induce an emergency stop from 4 vehicles as they attempted to overtake round a blind dipping bend into oncoming traffic. Mine his and the two cars coming the other way. Just could wait the 2 seconds to be able to see round the corner. Then got upset when i called him a brain dead ... strangely we both arrived at the next traffic lights within a second of each other further highlighting his competence. Upset as camera battery died half way to work. Must remember to charge it more often in the cold.

Me: That was an awesome ride in, possibly my quickest yet.. Surprising considering my legs feel like crap.

Garmin: Oh yeah? How do you work that out?

Me: Well, your timer says 1hr 5 total time which is the lowest I can remember. I'll need to check the moving time though.

    Garmin: Shame.

    Me: What?

Garmin: Well if you look closely you'll see that your distance is zero. I couldn't be bothered to speak to those satellites. Or your powermeter.

Me: Why you useless piece of shit. Still, at least I can save it and add the distance manually.

Garmin: Oh really? Nice idea, but....
