I know this should be in the road gear forum but yo get a better mix of responses here so...

I want to get a couple of carbon bottle holders for my Cayo Expert but don't really want to shell out £100 for a pair. I've seen the Token Carbon TK945 on Wiggle for £24 each. They look okay on the web but what about in reality and are they any good?

How do you review a bottle cage? – Surely it either holds a bottle, or it doesn’t.

Or am I missing something here?

It needs to hold a bottle firmly, needs to be able to get the bottle in and out easy and most importantly look good
  • Planet X. 20 squids for two. Great looking and hold bottles fine.

I like the metal cages. They usually come in various colors and you can bend them a bit,
if they don't hold the bottle right.

Campagnolo Centaur bottle cages are the best I've ever had, very secure hold on the bottles - good enough for the cobbles.

Yeah but how much do they cost. The thought of spending £100 of a couple of bottle cages seems a bit daunting tbh

About £25 (if you can find them - they're getting rarer)

Take a look at these listed on Ebay:

    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll? ... :IT&ih=019

On Wiggle, they are £49.99 each!!!

Reputable manufacturer, and I have also asked the seller directly if they are "copies", and he assures me they are not.

I was thinking of getting a pair.
    Hope this helps.

    Aaaagh,

Just noticed they have ended. However, they have been re-listed but at £3 higher price.
    Still a bargain.

According to their website http://www.planet-x-warehouse.co.uk/acatalog/Online_Catalogue_Planet_X_Carbon_86.html they're £20 each.

  • i buy metal ones for under a tenner at a market or some cheap store or get them with the bottle, plastic is crap. i think carbon is a tad excessive and costs too much.

I've found metal ones are crap aswell, don't last me 5mins, and don't look right on a decent bike.

They aren't that good, don't hold the bottles anywhere near as securely as the Campagnolo bottle cages, they aren't bad for the money though.

    Huh?

I've got Tacx Taos and Campag cages and can definitely tell the difference in quality - the Taos maybe OK for the Pros over cobbles as they only tend to use the smaller 500ml bottles, I wouldn't trust the Taos over cobbles with a 750ml bottle.

Well, normally, on subjects like this, i'd agree but I have two unbranded carbon cages [£25 each] and they're great. Carbon bends, doesn't break or scratch the bottle. Plastic is crap.

Is this thread a wind up or what?! £25 for a bottle cage! I didn't realise you could spend that much, or that it was considered normal to do so

IIRC the ones I have cost about £5 each; hold bottles just fine (I never realised you can buy ones that don't) and as for looks, well they look like bottle cages! Although I must admit most of the time I use a Camelbak anyway, but thats another thread/argument

Tut tut, so much too learn  I've tried the plastic ones and after a while they fail to hold the bottles securely. i have the metal ones on my MTB but they look crap on a carbon road bike. Camelbak's are down right uncomfortable on a long sweaty ride. For all these reasons i spent £39 each    on 2 carbon cages last weekend. For Christ's sack don't tell the misses though

Spesh do their "rib cage" (£6 at a popular green and yellow cycle store). At 37g I can't see any argument for anything more. It hold various size bottles securely and releases easily. Works both on and off road, lasts ages (2 years and still going strong). Rant over.
