Even if you prefer campy, you have to admit Shimano has some great visual designers. Their groupset looks pretty incredible.

The whole groupset:

Brifters:

The chain has hollow pins and slotted plates!

I prefer Shimano to Campag, but I'm not overly keen on the design of this. Then again - I like to ride my bikes, not look at them.

Looks great to me. Definitely one to look out for. But, I think the price will be high.

It might not all be bad the current Dura Ace price might fall as the new replaces it and the pros switch over and Shimano will probably slowly filter the new elements of the 09 group down the levels.
Like the newer shape of the STIs which has gone right down to Sora this year.

LOL, ok, here in the U.S. it's campy but doesn't really matter.

    Campag.

  • OK hands up how ugly is the New Dura Ace Groupset. the chainset looks like the crap ones you get on the chep bikes they sell in Asda. Thank god for Campag thats what i say. Record and Chorus are works of art compared this.the Brake and gear lever look half finished.....are you sure this is not scrap metal souvenirs picked up frpm pearl harbour to make this poor attempt of a groupset
  • Ps sorry for the Spellink Misteaks

Chainset looks like the FSA one and the hoods look similar to SRAM. Still,I can hear you all champing at the bit to bin your 'old' DA and fit the new one. Shimano (and Campag) don't get rich by underestimating the customer. Of course, there will be 'supply issues' that will ramp up expectation and the price.

Soon as I saw the new Dura Ace crank, the two tone nature of it reminded me of the crank on my old Raleigh Winner....made by SR iirc and looked like this one

Don't like the chainset, I prefer the current one aesthetically. With this one it looks as if considerations of form have triumphed over function in the design, which in turn (ironically) detracts from form. Mrushton is righ about the hoods, they look like the sram ones.

I'm Campag through and through, but I did get the chance to try out the new existing DA recently and it was ok. Not as smooth as it has been in the past, surpirisingly a little clunky in feel, with the exception of the very very comfortable hoods. They felt like holding computer joysticks, exactly where you want them, but I would still prefer Record or Chorus.

What this new incarnation feels like is anybody's guess. I think the improved look is very nice personally.

How come Shimano have made new shape shifters for the mechanical dura ace but kept the current shape(with little screen) for the electric Group?

Personally, I like the new sculpted look of the crankset, much better than the previous 'blob' effort. Never likely to be in the market for it so how it performs is rather academic, can't imagine it'll be a duffer mind.

I really like it, but I'm worried that if I order the compact chainset, will it go with my 2008 DA set up on my existing bike :?: I love the look of the new brakes though :D It's all lovely :!: :D

What do I ride? Now that's an Enigma!

I wonder if we would get more unbiased views from existing Shimano users / likers... I wouldn't ask a known 4x4 hater what they think of a new Range Rover (so don't ask me about new Range Rovers).

And in Germany, it is Campa :)

I think the new chainset is big improvement over the old one in terms of looks. But they are not nearly as pretty as the Dura Ace 9 speed crank, which was lovely.

It will be incompatible with any other group though. Should be fun for shops trying to keep parts in stock, what with 11 speed Campagnolo round the corner and Sram being incompatible with everything too (derailleur wise).

The price 'according to CW' is supposed to be about £1200 - a huge increase

I'd like to see how long the 'finish' lasts before looking tacky. (DA 7400 user here)

Like the cranks, not sure about the rear mech and the calipers - not as pretty as 7800 as I like shiny bits.

At £1200 that equates to a 100% increase as you can pick up 7800 DA for around £600.

That's got nothing to do with it....as we are talking about style rather than performance (which none of us can judge...not even current DA users) we are all entitled to express an opinion....and anyway a Shimano users opinion will be a no more unbiased one.

Cranks are like alloys on a sports car..they can make an average bike/car look really cool if you get the right ones. I like the crank arm to appear to evolve from the bb axle...and the hidden arm design first seen on C-Record and lately the whole range does that like no other makers design....where as this new Shimano crank seems to evolve from the ring area of the opposite spider arm and so doesn't look as natural or appealing. The concealed crank bolts are a welcome design feature but as the SR crank I posted shows it's not a new one.

The brakes look half decent with the two tone look but for me are let down with the exposed pivot which doesn't match the concealed look of the crank (maybe campag has a patent on such things)....having said that Campag skeleton brakes are ugly buggers and the current Record/Chorus pivot is more covered than concealed as the surround material has been shaved away and you can see the bump.

The rear mech looks so-so, the carbon fibre cage looks like it's got a Halford carbon sticker on it.

The front view of the shifters looks quite odd

    lever.jpg

whether this is the left or right lever it's hard to tell....the top area suggests it's the right which makes the inward sloping lever at odds with Campag's shape.

I'm more of a Campag fan, but when the new DA was announced I was considering that for my next build (whenever that's going to be) thinking it would have the same RRP as the current DA, but if the price does jump to over £1000 I think I'd rather stick with Record.
