Wow, I thought Simoni's ride was the biggest surprise but Contador beating Kloden?! Who the heck expected that?

Those who said they'd known about their Giro invite a while longer than they were letting on.
Oh and Ricco's private eye, sniffing around Madrid doctor's rooms.

Menchov: Since when can't he trial? :?

Simoni was the other real shock. It is noticable that those who have sat in the peloton for the first week, out-performed those who have chased the bonuses.

The last time Gibo rode an ITT like that, he won the Giro. I don't think he'll beat the flying Bert, but he must have his best form since 2003. Watch this space.

I also think Kloeden was told to fuel the war of words, as AC is and was, the designated leader. Get them concentrating on the wrong guy.

Yeah but even with preparing and being ready, Contador has never shown that he'd be not only the second best in a grand Tour TT but faster than Kloden! His ride was definitely a surprise.

True, I was just reacting to the fact that he'd looked out of form and a bit lost during the Giro and also that he'd said previously that the TDF is what he's really gunning for.

Very good point. I hadn't thought of that, although Ricco and DiLuca aren't really TT masters.

If he could make the podium at this age and in his final Giro, that'd be an amazing way to go out.

Today's lesson from the Giro : People who win the Tour de France are a level above people who win the Giro.

I thought Pinotti did a good ride too.
Fckin' Quintana … that creep can roll, man.

I hadn't realised that the "Bruiser" had won the Tour.

Tell that to Gino Bartali and Fausto Coppi.

71 Geraint Thomas (GBr) Barloworld 4.42
79 Steven Cummings (GBr) Barloworld 5.15
99 Charles Wegelius (GBr) Liquigas 6.02
149 Mark Cavendish (GBr) Team High Road 7.52
155 David Millar (GBr) Slipstream Chipotle Presented By H30 8.12
157 Bradley Wiggins (GBr) Team High Road 8.24

There's another lesson in here, somewhere.

Pah, Coppi was the greatest cyclist ever. I meant in the modern era.

What is the lesson there? That they're rubbish? (hi Lionel from Cycling Weekly)

I take it, by modern era, you mean circa 1999?
I wouldn't go back as far as 1998.

Surprised that Contador beat Kloden. In the hilly TT in the TdF last year it was the other way round and i think Kloden may have fallen?

I think climbs were steeper in today's stage though so maybe that explains some of the difference.

No less than Eddy Merckx himself said (in ProCycling) that when he won the Giro for the first time, he knew he could win the Tour de France. The Giro is very, very hard. All GT's are hard but I don't think many would argue that in recent years the Vuelta's been a touch easier.
