Big debate between me and my friends - if you could only use one sauce for the rest of your life, which would it be?

For me, it's got to be red.

Heinz Red Sauce. there are only one or two things I buy that has to be branded, tom sauce and cornflakes.
I've added a signature to prove it is still possible.

Brown is a far superior sauce to red - red sauce is the condiment of the commoner and a preference for it betrays a lack of sophistication.

But both products contain vinegar, so you're in a no-lose situation! I see one or two people have voted to express a preference for Brown (insert satirical local elections gag here).....

brown / red sauce...mmm quite political or what??
  • brown sauce is for northerners!!!

not that there is anything wrong with brown sauce, or northerners, it's just red sauce tastes better and the way the victim squeals, however i can only do it at night as i get bad sunburn..

    Red. Heinz.
    Brown. HP.
In that order. On balance. Just.

Twas not a question of class or sophistication :)

The reason I chose Red is because it's just more - for want of a better expression - versatile. Don't get me wrong, I much prefer brown sauce with a nice fry-up, but the debate is which one of the two for the rest of your life. It's got to be red!!

(Maybe I'm showing my common roots with my use of the phrase "fry-up" :D )

I'll have to sit on the fence here, as it depends a lot on the food - ideally brown for a cooked breakfast or bacon/sausage sandwich, whereas red is better with chips, fish fingers, etc.

The OH was staying in a hotel in Bath for work a few years ago. She asked if she could have some Brown Sauce when her breakfast arrived to which the snotty woman serving replied.

"that's so Northern I just knew you were going to ask for that".

The snotty woman could be right though, I'm a Southerner and really cannot stand brown sauce (but then my Dad is a keen brown sauce fan!)

Exactly - brown sauce on sausage or bacon butty but red goes with more stuff.

Hammerite - I can't believe that woman in the hotel - what a bloody outrage!!!!!! :x

Got to agree: red sauce wins.

Ever tried having steak with brown? don't waste a good bit of meat!
Having said that, scrambled eggs with thick granary bread and a dollop of brown is tricky to beat :?

But I like both! mmm the richness of the tomato with the tangyness of the brown. I don't have it that often though. Now, crushed black pepper; that is something I couldn't live without (aside from caffeine, which properly explains why I'm still awake...). Mixed herbs are very versatile too
