We discussed the calendar earlier in the year and mostly stuck with last years races + a few of the big ones (Cali / Het Volk)

Scheldeprijs is a "minor" race really.

It is but I've noticed that this year it's being 'bigged up' a bit more than normal. Why is that?

My hunch is that since the change to the spring calendar, with Fleche Wallone and Liege-Bastogne-Liege being moved back a week and the Amstel Gold moving forward by 6 days, there is no major race on midweek in this particular week anymore so suddenly the Scheldeprijs gets much more attention than before.

Because Cavendish won it last year?

    What he said
It's a little like wrestling a gorilla. You don't quit when you're tired. You quit when the gorilla is tired.

Maybe but it's Cyclingnews who have previewed it and they don't have a natural British bias (although that may have changed now Future Publishing own them).

    But how can it be considered a big race when you have these teams taking the start line;

    Preti Mangimi
    Josan Mercedes Benz Aalst CT
Bodysol - Euro Millions - Pôle Continental Wallon
    Profel Prorace Continental Team
    Willems Veranda's Continental Team

Hey, they're UCI ProContinental teams. Apparently ProContinental grade is enough to get you into the Tdf, let alone some mid-week Flandrian semi-classic

Sounds like something from the Belgian comedy film Gislain Lambert's Bike.

I took the trouble to check out the Willems Verandas website. It would appear that not only do they provide an unrivalled selection of verandas, gazebos, pergolas and other magnificent erections design to enhance the beauty of your home, they sponsor several cycling teams and clubs. More power to them. (Might be better to be sponsored by Josan Mercedes Benz Aalst, though.)

Well I suppose it's more classic than the HEW Cyclassics or the Wincanton Classic, isn't it? At least they didn't call it a monument.

It's supposed to be on cycling.tv but there's no link on the Live Races page... Anyone got any more info on this?

Scheldeprijs is working OK for me. Log in, click the live races tab near the top, and the link to the feed was there. Watching at 800kb.

Just seen the first train-related incident of the year.

    Working now.

It's such a bad website. A cyber maze.

That's so true. If you go from the front page, by the time you log in and actually find the race link, you end up with about 5 different open windows. Frustrating.

Speaking of trains, do you think we'll see one of the comedy attempts at a train High Road seem to do?

Is it just me or is this just a dull, dull, dull race? It always ends in a sprint - why not just do 3 laps of the finishing circuit and be done with it.

Schoolboy error. Not what you'd expect from him.
  • Haha looks even better from the aerial replays

I guess CW will be calling it a monument next year then.

Damn multilingual McEwen. I want to hear what today's excuse is... but it's in Flemish.

You can see it now can't you, "multiple classic winner Mark Cavendish..."

We should add a spoiler to the thread title - Doobz jump to it!

Oh, he was 3rd. At least he was in the mix this time.

Boonen lost the race but the speed at which Cavendish was sprinting suggests he has 3-4km/h on everyone else in the bunch. He's the quickest there.
  • Oh well you mentioned Cavendish first, so if anyone complains about spoilers it's your fault :P

Looked a pretty chaotic sprint today, was waiting for a crash to happen at any minute.

As McEwen said it's a good job Weylandt didn't pull left as it'd have been all over for Cav, but well done to him great sprint, very McEwen-esque!

Don't they say that you should aim to sprint to a point just beyond the line (am sure I heard that somewhere) to avoid being nipped on the line, and that looked like what Cav was doing, as his speed over the closing meters was pretty impressive. And a good post-race interview from him, far more coherent than his post G-W rant, so obviously the answer is only to interview him when he's won :D
