Hincapie's had bad luck in the past 3 out of 4 years, stem snapped, broke collar bone and then this year...more punctures. Basically Monty Dog will trash any race other than the tour of flanders and roubaix so long as it fits his arguement, he's trashed the world road championships, Fleche Wallone and trashed the grand tours in terms of respecting them as major wins...he rides the cobbled cyclo tourist events from what I read so is a little keen on cobbles for some reason-I only raced over them and they were a bloody nightmare-Tour De Hainult (now le Region Wallonia stage race) back in 1993-Ullrich rode it as prep for the worlds that year, as did VDB, Matttan , Mercx and a load of others...so, perhaps that's why I have such bad memories of the cobbles, getting hammered out the back and out the sport soon after0

There's only one thing consistent about the guy and that's ability to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory - e.g. Deutschland Tour 2 years ago when he crashed in the final sprint and Schumacher won the bonus to take overall! If he was such a favourite yesterday, with 4 other High Road riders in the breakaway, how come no-one dropped back when he punctured?
Nobody ever called him a classics legend, but he's always a contender for Roubaix.
Also he's very modest and comes across as a thoroughly nice guy (he gave the missus his autograph last year along with countless others). He never moans and when its his job to play domestique he works his ass off.
He's disliked cos he's American and he rode with Disco/USPS.
If George was English you would be creaming yourself over his classics prowess.
I agree, I met him giving out autographs at a small race in France a couple of years ago, seemed like a nice enough chap and whats more the locals seemed to have a lot of respect for him. Which I thought strange as the French/everybody all hate Disco, if you believe what you read on this forum.0 -
If someone is prepared to stick their neck out and put themselves in the frame as a 'favourite' then surely we are entitled to challenge that assumption? The only 'classic' I've challenged in recent years is Ghent-Wevelghem, because it is over-shadowed by two monuments and is often seen as the 'runners-up' prize because all the key riders are focused on the weekend events - besides, the organisers have gone a long way to ruining it's credibility by their own ineptitude - witness Freire's comments from last week, or Mattan's 'dodgy' victory in 2006. OK, I'll admit I was never lucky enough to ride these events for 'real' but I know others that have - but at least I'm consistent in my opinions and not a puppet for someone else's PR machine!Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..0

What do you think of Lance Armstrong win at Fleche Wallone? You said it was a crap race nmore or less, not a classic win and you dismissed the grand tours as boring and predictable, you dismissed the worlds too in one of your anti Armstrong rants also. i do remember what you say0 -
Blimey - is Dave_1 stalking Monty Dog?

yes, well, we did argue all of summer 04 to 05 about ARmstrong so I remember the arguements going back and forth . You and Monty verus me
Timoid started a thread called "Lance Hating"...wonder if he remembers it. 2005. Basically, life was somewhat quiet during week evenings in Hong Kong as was staying away from nightlfie distractions hence good old C+ was my hobby at that time..but would come back at 3am some mornings on weekends after a few beers and post stuff :P and have to check it next morning for accuracy or to find out what I said, no danger of this in Edininburgh0 -

Crikey. I'm on the list too...
I vaguely remember the discussion. You were quite adamant in your defence of Armstrong. Times change huh? It's a little like wrestling a gorilla. You don't quit when you're tired. You quit when the gorilla is tired.0 -

it was constant through 2005 though...almost every posting was about LA..0 -
And the trend starts anew, as I can see...
How does Armstrong creep up in a thread about Paris-Roubaix?0 -
Well Dave, you've certainly set the cat amongst the pigeons! Fortunately, we've all know each other long enough not to get upset about it - besides, I'm not exactly known for hiding my opinions, so magnamously have to accept a degree of criticism.Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..0

Timoid, I've been trying to let Dave's heroic defence of LA rest undisturbed lest he look silly since we found out every fker for the last 10 yrs has been hopped to the gills This is a 'Team High Horse'-esque appreciation that we must all soldier on into the future together, bygones be bygones etc. Now you've ruined it!___________________

Yes, that's true. The debates through the years have been informative. Put it this way, I would not wear a yellow wrist band again. Anyway, you guys know your stuff. I think there should be proper gathering of C+ers/Bike radarers. I have been replying to posts from a good few of you weekly for near 4 years, haven't met any other than Keith Oates. Let's meet in London some weekend C+ers/bikeradars.0 -

for the record, I do not believe LA could have done what he did without doing as Ullrich did. It makes me sick to see this livestrong thing still running when it is built on a shaky foundation. I hope Lemond brings him down with the Grand Jury level court case he has filed against Trek-making Armstrong go and perjure himself perhaps?0 -

Why can't you just leave it? At least Armstong does something for mankind with his fame, unlike that fat ginger waster Ullrich.
Lance has probably had more of a positive impact on peoples lives than Lemond ever will like it or not.Fckin' Quintana … that creep can roll, man.0 -

That's some BS right there. Knocking a guy for doing so much good.
Armstrong is not a nice man, all signs point to him being a doper, but don't try and knock the good he does because you don't like the guy. It's a little like wrestling a gorilla. You don't quit when you're tired. You quit when the gorilla is tired.0 -
I find it very very sad that anyone would speak ill of what Armstrong has done for the fight against Cancer.
For me over the past cpl of years he has gone from Hero to zero. I find it hard to watch all of my archive footage of him riding now. BUT let us not forget, this human being survived a severity of Cancer that nobody else on the face of this planet has ever come back from, let alone got back on a racing bike.
He has done more for the fight against Cancer over the past 7 or 8 years than any government, and has given hope to hundereds of thousands of sufferers.
Thats the sad point for me. If as it seems, eventually his alledged drug use may come to light, it will have a massively negative effect on the Livestrong Foundation. I hope that the effects will not be too damaging.
But please?? Anyone who knocks the good that he has done in that field is a very stupid individual.0 -
Apologies for posting bout armstrong lol, only read the last page... doh! :oops:0
