You could maybe have slowed down to let him overtake, however he could have suddenly swerved back into the lane and took you out. So it was probably best to keep ahead of him.

IMHO, when being overtaken (however well or badly), you should try top maintain your speed. Accelerating will only prolong the overtake, while slowing down unexpectedly only makes it harder for the overtaking driver to "tuck in" if he does decide against it at the last minute.

Sorry, but that is one of those "rules" that I hate!! It works 10% of the time and the other 90% of the time it gets you killed.......

If you judge that the vehicle is ahead of you and needs space to pull in then brake - otherwise you will get squashed.
If you judge that the vehicle is behind you, has no chance of getting past and needs space to pull in the accelerate or you will get squashed.
If you judge that the vehicle is alongside and has not enough time to either get past or back behind you then head for the ditch and pray......

It is about judgement, not rules and In this case it sounds like he did option 2, exactly the right thing from the way it is described!
  • I would have stopped, but only as a witness. Mike is in no way responsible for the accident, if you collide with slower / parked / vehicles in front of you it is always your fault (since you should be paying more attention to the potential hazards). The lorry driver simply should not have attempted to overtake you unless he could see the road far enough ahead was clear to do so.
