coughing - this is getting stoopid now

Hi,

I've had a cold that became chesty for about 3 weeks now. Last week I was just about better but I woke up on Saturday morning feeling lousy again. Now my cough has got worse and has been joined by a snotty nose and feelings of lousyness. Not bad enough to be off work.

It's known as 'man flu'.

I've not been on the bike all this time (so bye bye to my 2008 objectives) and I've been keeping warm, drinking lots etc etc. been to the GP who said all I can do is wait and don't train.

Anyone got any other ideas to help things move along? I'm not feeling sorry for myself (anymore) not looking for sympathy, I just want to get better. A long weekend of lying on the sofa watching telly is going to annoy me somewhat.

Any thoughts?

Cheers,
Andy

Andy get to the docs again and ask very nicely for some antibiotics. I had a similar lumpy cough that lasted for 5 weeks, kept thinking it was going away, then it got worse again. 1 week course of antibiotics saw it off at last though.

Thanks Bronzie I might well try that. He's very anti-antibiotics - which is as it should be - but if there's a chance that they might help me then it won't cost me to ask.

It is of course impossible to tell whether the abitbiotics made Bronzie bettter or he was about to get better anyway. Your GP needs to examine you. Also it might be worth getting a sputm specimen looked at, if you a producing lovely green purulent phlegm. Down in Kent it feels like alemost the entire population has had the sort of symptoms you describe - the starting to feel better and then feeling worse again is typical.

yeah if it's green then it's bacterial, yellow and it's a virus - or so the story goes

won't be hard for me to get a sample, but I might wait until I get home to do it properly!

Vermooten, have you tried taking Echinacea (not sure if that's spelt correctly)? It's a herbal thing which is supposed to alleviate upper respiratory tract conditions/ cold/ flu etc.

aha this has cropped up before! I'll try it. Do I go under a towel to inhale it in hot water?

A few weeks behind should be able to be caught up..., certainly not enough reason to abandon all objectives. Refine them perhaps?

I'd go the antibiotics route to get better, having been as ill for as long as you have. Perhaps it was that TT in icy conditions that drove it deep into your system

Prevention is better than a cure.....but what works for me may not work for you. I believe there is some scientific basis for taking Echinacea

I like to think I don't get colds/man flu, because I stay fit, eat lots of vegetables, not a lot of meat, sleep lots, don't drink alcohol, and do take cod liver oil supplements.

Maybe a bit too late for you now, Andy, but don't abandon your plans, and even if you have to modify them substantially, there is always next year

I think I know this cold/nasty coughing thing. I've got the same, had the antibiotics from doc and didn't clear me up. I hope mine is on the way out as the coughing is the same but the snotty nose and feeling lousey are nearly gone. I really hope so anyway.

Tried the Echinacea / Vit C / lots or oranges etc route myself - certainly didn't work for me.

Think the echinacea can help you AVOID infections if you are feeling a bit low, but whether it helps recovery once you are already full of lurgi is another matter.

    so don't
