Hitting the ground hard

Not sure if this is the right place to ask this one but it seems to be.

I came off the bike a week and a half ago (greasy mud on the road, lost front wheel sideways) and initially thought I'd got off lightly by breaking my fall with my face!

However when I got home I realised that I'd taken a good whack on my hip as well. The whole of the rght side of my leg bruised (impressed the kids no end) and there was a bit of swelling.

This all happened on the Saturday. I managed to get back on the Turbo on the Tuesday and seemed okay and have been training most days since.

The problem is I still have a swelling on the top of my thigh/hip about the diameter of my fist and while it isn't painful it feels a bit odd and it feels full of fluid rather than a firm swelling I am used to from my football days.

As I am sure there are many people on this forum have fallen off once or twice, is this normal? I would have expected it to have gone by now 12 days later. I hate going to see docs just so they can tell me it'll go of it's won accord and not to worry. They have proper stuff to deal with.

Whaddya think? :?:

I had a swelling on my lip that took ages (3 weeks) to finally go away, if i touched it I could still feel a hard bit inside but from looking at it it looked pretty normal. Probably nothing but I'm the same with going to the doctor, if it was around for much longer I'd run up and get it checked out.

I came off a few weeks ago, grazed arm and leg, but hurt my thumb real bad, had 2 sets of x-rays 1 week apart as they weren't sure if I'd broke any of the small bones, thatnfully not, but it still hurts like hell.

If it's not better in a few days, go to the doctor, just to be on the safe side, it's all to easy to chip a bone or push something slightly out.

No pain, no limit of movement - UNLIKELY to be anything serious - a bad bruise most likely adn fliud thats leaked into spaces. Get it checked if you're concerned - the practice nurse might be enough. Home cures like arnica(?) for bruises, some ice/warmth and very gentle massage around teh edge will help speed up the 'clearing up the damage ' work the body has to do but once stuff escapes from cells it can take a while as the system is designed 1. not to leak in the first place, 2. not to want to deal with stuff from 'outside'.

Usual thing -RICE (rest, ice, compression and elevation) - at least the ice and painkillers bit. If it doesn't show signs of reducing, go to the Docs. Most likely to be bursitis if it's on a joint - fluid accumulates there to protect the joint. You could have chipped a bone though, so definitely keep an eye on it and go to Docs if at all suspicious.

I took a tumble in July last year that caused a big bruise on my hip. About a week later I had some swelling, not as impressive sounding as yours but it was about the size of an egg. It did look strange and got some comments when I was in shorts but there was no pain and it was gone 3-4 weeks after the crash. Hope yours clears up too :D

It's a haematoma by the sounds of it. By this stage it will have liquified (hence the boggy sort of feeling). Your body needs to re-absorb all this old knackered bruise and you can help it do it. However by the sounds of the size of it, it's gonna take a while.

Massage, loads of it. Helps improve local blood supply and break down any scar tissue forming within.
Heat - at this stage ice will do feck all, it needs heat for the same reasons as above; improved local blood supply.
Exercise (gently) - guess what, improves local blood supply, also ensures that the new structural fibres of the damaged muscle grow in the right direction - along the lines of stress.

Warning: these things can get infected and need antibiotics or draining (or both). If it gets hot and sore and red (other than when you are doing the above to make it warm), then get thyself to a physician.

I crashed this time last year. One of my injuries was a large gash and swelling on my hip (the fleshy bit called love handle). Within 2 days I had put on 5lbs in weight which I discovered was due to internal bruising and fluid retention. I don't want to alarm you but the swelling on the hip only went (finally) around December. Up until then I couldn't bear to have a belt tight around my waist and had to let my trousers sit on the hips.

    Thanks all.

It hasn't gone down yet, but I'm training as normal at full intensity. It doesn't particularly hurt so I'll just ignore it.

I'll try take more baths instead of showers to heat it up.

And thanks for the specific infection advice doc. I'll keep an eye out.
