I choose to use the motoring analogy: I love Alfas, but over the years they have broken my wallet and patience. I now drive a Japanese car, doesn't look as nice and has less soul but boy does it work well, which for significant periods of time the alfas didn't. Shimano all the way!

But when you drive the Alfa, there is no comparison in how it makes you feel. I am assuming people feel the same way about Campag.
I used to have an Alfa GTV, so I understand fully your dilemma...

There was a chap in my club would not have Anything jap on his bike.....at any price...........He had been a Jap POW .Enough said . As far as he was concerned.........least we forget.
I don't think that many people do, i see lots of mountain bikes with a mix of both Sram and Shimano.
I know more people who hate Sram than hate Shimano

......heading for the box, but not too soon I hope!
Shimano isn't cheaper though, I got all the pretty carbon centaur stuff for £380, same price as plain old 6600 Ultregra.
No washing lines, nice looking, light and cheaper than Ultegra SL. Campag is the winner in my books.
