removed pedals, replaced with flats.... no change, removed chainset and replaced and tightened to inch of my life..no change....tightened all chainset bolts...no change

had bb removed and retightened couple of weeks ago at lbs....at my wits end now
every time i get out of the seat the noise starts....as ive removed pedals and tried flats it cannot be this or my cleats...chainset tight.....but soon as a little pressure put on the pedal the creak starts

could it be down to the bb again?visit to my lbs?

Try looking at the spokes on your rear wheel. Compress each pair and see if any make a noise - could be a loose spoke or just noisey wheels (a friends new wheel makes some noise when under big pressure).

thanks...have a check tonight...never thought it could be anything like that
noise seems to come from the bb area, but as it is with bikes noise travels.....

    sending me nuts!

    - Possibly bars / stem as you put a much greater load on them out of the saddle.
    - Sometimes the wheel axle / QR / fork-end interface can squeak - undoing & retightening of the Q/R, sometimes with the barest film of grease on the contact surfaces
    - Maybe its just your kness and back

Is it your frame flexing?! Strap yourself in and feel the power!!!

    many thanks!
  • Who installed your chainset?? Maybe when the cranks were installed they were a tight fit on to your b/b,this sometimes happens!! So normly they have to be filed down, but filed down to much could result in a loose fit and a creaky crank!! Can only be this if you have a sqaure tapered b/b though.
Up hup hup hup.....fricking hate that!

ive taken chainset off a couple of times...it is square tapered and also removed by lbs when they adjusted bb last time i took it in a couple of weeks ago
noise does seem to come from that area....but only when im out of seat.....even when i put as much pressure on seated i cannot hear the noise
  • Yeah i had the same problem, i bought a new record chainset and filed both of the square holes down, where the b/b goes through the crank!! The drive side crank was filed down spot on,but the left handside was filed to much(dumbass!) And when installed creaked everytime i got out the saddle to climb!! The problem can be solved by wrapping foil around the b/b,not ideal though!!

Long shot, but could it be the seat post? Maybe your weight on the saddle prevents the creak, no weight and slight frame flex under power?

    kitchen foil?

ill try the seatpost aswell.....just so annoying and spoils my ride....at a stage where i dont want to get out of the seat!
  • Yeah sounds daft, but something like that just to wrap around the sqare tapered part of the bottom bracket to bulk it up. Tightly though!! Also have you tried greasing your crank....pardon the expression!!

grease inside the threads on the crankarms?
  • Headset?
  • does it creak when u lean on the hoods - i had a problem with creaking lately

tightened the bolts that held the brake levers on the handlebars and it went away - the brake levers had worked themselves loose and making a racket

Have you removed the chain rings and re-seated - that what happened with me - every thing tight, but still getting a click, removed chain rings and refitted - problem solved.

BB's are really hard to sort - as you have a square taper - is it the cassette type, as the only time these creak is when the drive side might not be tight enough or the BB is on it's way out - needs tools though, and a bit pricey if an lbs does it - remove both cranks, remove lock ring, remove and re grease BB shell and refit - easy job but will need tools - done in 15 mins if you know what you are doing.

I think it's your headset / spacers. The extra effort you put through the bars / fork steerer while out of the saddle can cause a minute movement of the steerer / headset / spacers.

I had a creaking problem when using carbon fibre headset spacers.
I changed them to alloy ones and the creaking stopped.

Also if you've got a stack of thin headset spacers try and replace it with a single thick one, or as few as possible.

Even try a smear of grease between the spacers.

  • Have you tried tightening your front mech / changer. If it is of the band on type, and it becomes slightly loose, it can creak due to tiny flex in the tube.

I sometimes have had the same problem and found it to be an issue with the wheel skewars not being tight enough.

My Alu Giant used to creak with a Campag BB. Advice from LBS sorted it on the spot. Wrap the BB threads in plumbers tape - incredibly thin ptf tape, all good hardware shops have it. Fixed it on the spot. One of those "mechanics tricks".

another guy suggested kitchen foil...tried this last night and today a lot better but still a slight noise under pressure....dfficult to get the foil on without moving it when putting the arms on....plumbers tape might be the answer...many thanks
