Can I combine cycling with strength and Power based MMA?

I clocked up a couple of thousand miles last Summer including a cycling tour in the alps, the British cyclosportive. I went on a few club runs and had the cycling bug in a big way. I Had plans to train right through the winter on my turbo and cycle 200miles per week commuting to work. Then get into racing and a few TTs. However once the weather settled in the bike was stuck in the back room. Although I planned to have just a month off its been the whole winter.

The sun is shining and I'm feeling the need to get back on the bike. I have started mixed martial arts though which requires strength and power which probably means it's counterproductive to cycling and vice versa. Can the two exist together? What about if I keep my cycling to shorter rides under 50miles and TT riding? Its a bit of a shame that I havent capitalised on the good base I had last year. Will I still feel some of the benefits even though I havent done much since October?

  • I don't see why they can't got together. I still weight lift even though its supposedly detrimental, and am going to take up boxing in the near future with my Uncle, just to mix it up a bit.

Just do what you enjoy I say.

Ditto above. Unless you are seeking Olympic gold or 10th level dan the main reason for doing cycling/etc is to enjoy it. FWIW I like doing weights sessions and don't particularly care if it means doing a time trial 10secs slower.

So I would say keep doing both. Anyway it will mean if anyone gets too smug about beating you in a race at least you will be able to kick their backsides. :D
