    1. THe 305 is a brilliant opeice of kit
    2. It is NOT a GPS!

    To clarify that...

The 305 is a training aid with limited GPS facilities and comopatibility with mapping software. If yoyu are happy usingthe SportTrack, or Training Centre software then you will be fine, but if you want to converse with mapping software such as Mempory-Map you need additional software or the most up to date versions.

For pure navigation, the GPS option such as an Etrex is better value, but for training the 305 has the Edge (bad pun)

well for a £100+ you migh expect more than a glorified speedo (as is the case for the 205), given that most decent comps cost less than half......I don't think anyone expects a full on satnav with maps and streets showing, but it IS sold as a device that you can follow a predetermined course. Without using 3rd party software, it is difficult to generate a new course to follow without having previously ridden it,which is bordering on the impractical! Agreed though it is a great piece of bike kit, just that it could be a whoooole lot better for not much more effort on the part of Garmin.

I'm a bit flummoxed by the range of different products available and provided I reach my goals this spring/summer, I've promised myself a GPS unit for wayfinding as I tend to like simply heading out and about on random jaunts or doing one-way journeys to friends/relatives that live within cycling distance.
What is there on the market that has a GB base map loaded up and could guide you from say Bristol to Birmingham on all the b-roads etc?

Garmin Edge 705. Combines full GPS with all other cycling facilites eg: gradient, cadence, HR, speed etc etc. Out soon and I for one will be nabbing one. Navigation on the 305 is ok but not really good enough IME.
