, and I managed 15,000 miles on one set of rear brake blocks!

How do you manage that? I seem to go through brake blocks every 6-8 weeks (about 700-1000 miles) in winter.

Have to say I think my cleaning could be better. Always start the winter with good intentions!! And I do use softish blocks in an attempt to save wear on the rims.

  • I don't use my back brake much out of chain gangs. Currently they are looking very good at 6000miles. I burn through them on my Courier but that often has child seat or trailer. Even the front brakes have only been relaced twice ( I think, three times at most). I did however go through one rear rim! I find the rim is softer than the brake blocks. :?

I dont know exactly but reckon my Trek 830 has done around 36,000 mile since new in 1995, I average around 3,500 commuting and about another 1,200 leisure annually although this is on my Thorn . The frame, bars and stem are the only origonal parts and Iv'ejust replaced the drivechain and wheels last year for around the third time. Steel really is real and reliable !!

  • Since 2003 I have done 17000 miles the last 2 years I have had a summer bike and used my trusty Reynolds 531 steel frame for half the time; before that I only had one bike. It is now equipped with a Schmidt dynamo and mudguards for winter use. I originally had it built as a race frame with mudguard clearance so it would now be classed as a audax bike. I did loads of touring Barnsley to Isle of Sky and back, Cork in southern island and back, a trip down to the south coast most weekends away and Sunday club runs. So probably the mileage is in the region of 34,000. It’s been re-sprayed in 2004 and the rear drop outs widened, she was not used between - circa 1990 to 2003. I now have more money than I used to have so I keep thinking of a new frame. But it does the job perfectly that I don’t want to change it. The frame and a San Marco rolls saddle are the only original parts now – so for legal lighting reasons I can claim it is pre 1984! I tried a new lighter saddle but did not get on with it so back to the rolls. Since 2003 it has hit the floor 5 times due to – ice, pothole, slippery bend, Sheffield tram lines and a bus.
Racing is rubbish you can\'t relax and enjoy it- because some bugger is always trying to get past.

Origonal Rolls -- that may be a record !! Yeah a San Marco Rolls is the biz must be one of the comfiest around I just couldn't get on with a Brooks B17, looks classy but it was too soft for me.
