Death of Sheldon Brown

A sad day indeed. Just browsing his site always told me something new about the bike, never mind the wealth of knowledge he freely gave to us and his sheer enthusiasm for all things cycle related. The bike industry should somehow mark his passing for all the effort he put into our pastime.M.Rushton0

Very sad to hear about this tragedy. He was unique, which is a pity as the world would be a much better place if there were more people in it with his combination of enthusiasm, intelligence, humanity and sensible irreverence.0

Like everyone else on here, very sad. I had heard last summer through this forum that he was ill and sent him a message from all of us. He replied. Here it is and his reply is below:
It typifies the man. A good man.

Dear Sheldon
No need to reply. I just wanted to say how sorry we all are on the Bikeradar.com newsgroup (UK) to have learned, belatedly, of your health challenges. I don't know if you are aware of what a cult hero you are among dedicated cyclists in the UK, but, believe me when I say that you are one of the most respected figures in the sport.
If you accept prayers, mine are with you. If you prefer positive thoughts, they are as well.
I just did the Ventoux, by the way, WITH A FLAT BACK TYRE! Sometimes life throws you things you are not expecting.
Chapeau, mon Brave!

Thanks for your concern. I'm bearing up OK, some days better than others. I guess I'll just have to play out whatever cards I've been dealt.
I'll continue updating http://sheldonbrown.com/health as news comes in...(and when the sheldonbrown.org server gets back online...)
All the best,
Sheldon0 -

I have just learnt of Sheldon's sad passing and would like to add my condolences. My thoughts go out to his family. I have enjoyed his cycling articles immensely and more recently, his journal too. He really seemed to know how to live life to the full. Many thanks for the assistance and hours of happiness you have passed on to so many Sheldon.0

Sheldon was off-work when I visited the cyclery, though I was able to leave him a CTC jersey and ramble on at him about 650b wheels in french (over t'internet). Really sad news.0

I was on holiday in Devon last week, and away from the Internet, so I only found out when I read Matt Seaton's bicycle column in Thursday's Guardian. Really sad news . He was a real enthusiast, and his website is a fantastic resource.0
