sore knees in the cold

I often find that when I get back from my 3 hr endurance ride in the cold my knees hurt. Even after a long, hot shower they still look a bit red and feel cold to touch.
I wear long pants, but maybe I should add some knee warmers or knee supports?
I got sore knees yesterday toward the end of my basic endurance ride. I thought, oh no..ITB band again! However It's completely cleared up just 24hrs later. I did a 1 hr turbo ride today to test them, and felt nothing. Is this common?

As you suggested yourself Onabike, wear knee warmers even underneath longs on a cold day. I've started doing so this winter after a touch of bursitis (Housemaid's Knee) last year and have had no problems, although this has been an exceptionally mild winter so far.
Glucosamine tablets may also help. I now take 1000mg a day on advice from the physio who I consulted about my knee problem.0
