ooohhh tough choice - both top bikes.
Personally I would go with the Spesh as I prefer the frame....
Probably find a lot of split decisions on this matter0 -
on looks hmmm the GT.
are merlin doing a carbon fibre rock lobster frame?0 -

I had heard rumours that they had one in the pipeline also....0 -
The GT is built for hard riding, not just pure XC race. So if you want to hammer it a bit more, I'd look more at the Zaskar. Test as always ;-). The Zaskar frame weighs in at 2.65lbs!0
-
You're not biased towards GT perchance are you SS?0
-
Both great looking bikes. Go with the GT - too many Spesh's on the trails as it is.I hate it when people say David Beckham's stupid...its not like anyone ever says: 'Stephen Hawking - he's s**t at football.' Paul Calf0
-
Me biased? Nah! ;-)
The Zaskar vs the Stumpy, the big rivalry of the 90s. But the Zaskar won everything, XC, trials, 4x even DH! The new one seems to have gone back to its roots, a hard riding, but light hardtail. And its drop dead gorgoeus!0 -
Spesh!
It seems so easy to make a carbon frame sexy yet GT missed the boat totally with that frame! I expected so much yet feel so disappointed!
Your other option of course is a frame that is 400 quid cheaper than the Spesh? Giant do a carbon hardtail0 -
I think GT got it spot on! Very light, very strong, looks the nuts! 900 frame only.0
-
£200 more than the Giant! Thats a set of XTR Cranks0
-
That makes the Stumpy 500 quid more. Get the wheels too lol ;-)0
-
I'd also suggest looking at the Yeti Arc frame as well - Totally gorgeous and only £700.0
-
Does look very nice! On a budget, the XC racers favourite, the Guess XC1:

Or the Viper Scandium hardtail on Chain reaction at 249.99!0

Amazing what you can get nowadays! The Zaskar LE 96 frame was 800 quid!!!0

Merlin have indeed got a carbon Lobster on display in their shop. Full XT group inc rims, and usual RF deus finishing. Not sure on the price but either £1299 or £1399 springs to mind.
Looks very tasty, not sure it can compare with the looks of the GT though. If your anywhere near Merlin it might be worth having a look. Pretty sure its not on their webby yet, but they are always a bit slow to update.

what's the finish on the Merlin? clear coat with white decals? someone go take a pic of it0
-
iirc it is clear coat white decals.
Decals are the same as on the other Lobsters

I've got thr carbon Stumpy and it's by far the best bike I've ever owned, and I've owned a few over the 15 years I've been riding. Light, responsive, great handling and copes with anything you can throw at it!2011 Yeti ASR5 carbon: http://www.pinkbike.com/photo/5817307/

Thats one lovely bike you have there sir!0 -
Yes Andrew the Arc is a top bike at a good price - I was at the bromley bike shop the other week and in the flesh its awesome.0

Bromley Bike Co is my LBS and I always make a point of spending a few minutes looking at the Yeti's. When I first started biking you couldn't beat the sight of John Tomac on his Arc with the Tioga disk drive etc. - and if I'm not mistaken he once rode one with road bike handlebars! Mmm.......... Anyway, it's still a great bike!2011 Yeti ASR5 carbon: http://www.pinkbike.com/photo/5817307/

That's firmly in "bike porn" territory.
