porridge is best, but warm. Don't forget that you need a wait before you go out, i'd advise, if riding for all day then get up an hour earlier, eat splodge and go back to bed. It'll be fine before cycling to school though.

frosties are my monring poisoon, the sugar is quick energy so you'll get to school no problem and for all day just before to eat some slow release energy foods as well, I dont' and I'm fine but I tend to be fueld by copious amounts of the previous nights ale and cheese..

I eat various cereals before setting off - Muesli, Shreddies and the like. I try and avoid high fat, high sugar, high salt cereals though - lots are bad for you.

For breakfasts, shredded wheat or weetabix with 'in season' fruit for sweetness is what I go for, no added sugar or salt in these cereals. Sandwich filling, I normally take tuna on wholemeal bread with cucumber and tomato, works for me

I have a cooked breakfast (bacon, eggs etc) if I'm out all day. Then I take a cheese sandwich to have for lunch and a flapjack for a snack. I usually stop for a cup of tea and a nice slice of cake too!
  • Is sugar good for breakfast?
And does it give you engergy?

Bikedevil says its "quick energy", but other people say to avoid it. :? :? :?
  • Packed foods for all day riding:

    - Peanut butter and Jam Butty. (Sugars, fats and carbs - great recharge food)
    - Banana (or 2) - but can go squidgy (Instant energy)
    - Meusli Bar/FlapJacks (Good slow release)

    Is sugar good for breakfast?

Depends on what type of sugar, how much and what kind of excersise you're doing after.

If you're referriung to the common all garden white 'silver spoon' type stuff - then go easy on the stuff. Sugars in Fruit and Vegetables are better for you as they're not processed. Personally I take my sugars in the form of Honey or dried fruits...

Sugar IS energy - it's one of the prime energy giving substances, but as with anything - in moderation... if you overload the sugars then the body converts them and stores them as bonus energy... i.e. FAT - and if you don't do enough excercise to reconvert the Stored energy (FAT) back then you just get fatter...

As for Breakfast... I'm a Muesli Whore (Skimmed milk only)... it's the only thing to start the day with AFAIC... (podge comes a close second, but it's a bit faffy)
get on your bikes and ride!

Does nobody eat Kendall mint cake anymore? Great stuff!

If I'm out for a long ride (allday's a bit overoptimistic!), big carb breakfast then cereal bars or flapjack washed down with energy drink and water.

Medium ride then whatever takes my fancy, cereal bars and water.

Short ride, OD on sugar go crazy but have a real blast.

For breakfast it has to be Weetabix for me (3 biscuits fills me up for 2-3 hours). The organic version is 95% whole wheat. 5% malted barley extract and a tiny bit of added sugar and salt (but it's a healthy amount). Or there's Shredded Wheat which as far as I know is 100% whole wheat and nothing else.

For food on the move stear clear of those cereal bars. They're branded to look healthy, but they're usually loaded with sugar and other rubbish you don't want. it's gotta be a whole meal chicken salad sandwich and bananas and apples for sugar. You want fructose from fruit rather than sucrose from actual sugar. it's much better for you. If you're worried about the bananas getting squashed, buy a Banana Guard from Amazon or somewhere. So simple! Why didn't i think of it first!

  • LOL, a Banana Guard, I have seen some one at school with one of them.:lol::lol: Ohh, innuendos we made about him.

BTW, thanks alot for the help.

Breakfast on a normal day is Cornflakes, on a cycling day 2 wheatabix (3 if I could leave more time before riding!) with sometimes hot milk. If i'm in a hurry then sugar, if not the honey :D

One fine day in the middle of the night, two dead men got up to fight. Back to back they faced each other, drew their swords and shot each other.

current favorites are porridge or shredded wheat with dried apricots, walnuts and a handful of sultanas, both with a tsp of runny honey.

I liek to eat porridge for breakfast, Quaker Oats so simple takes 2.5minutes in the microwave :D

As for all day affairs, not really done one yet but i like things like flapjack energy bars, haribo star mix and robinsons orange in my camelpack.

Afterwards I rather like a Jacket potatoe with chilli and sour cream - you can even use the Stag less than 5% fat chilli in a can if you've got none handy. Also a big glass of milk goes down a treat
  • porridge; it looks nice and smells nice, but it haven't found one i like the taste of.
Im always trting different types of porridge and can't manage to eat more than 3 spoon fulls.
Does any one know of any porridge that is better than average, taste wise.
  • I have cereal most days.
But I shan't go into the minute detail.

    Different days, different cereals.

After abig pi55 up, it's a fry up.

Abroad, it's something nice and foreign like a kick ar5e espresso and some croissants.

    It all depends.

Get a banana guard, they are great, and always bring a smile to peeps faces...peeps will take the P until they realise how good they really are... http://www.bananaguard.co.uk/

As for brekkie, I just have a banana a little before I set off....wake up, go down stairs, eat banana, get my cycling kit on, brush teeth and away I go...I have a shower at work and then a bowl of porridge...seems to work for me :0)

  • Porrige is good... but I think I have a slight allergy to oats as it makes me feel slightly bloated so I dont really eat it although I do like it.

I tend to have bran flakes with a banana cut up in them. Or weetabix with banana.

All fur coat and no knickers....
  • LOL; http://www.bananaguard.co.uk/
Today i took Weetabix' in my lunch box.

BTW: Can any one recommend any really good porride? So far the ones i have tried i really don't like the taste of.

It's not the porridge, it's what you do to it...I just get quaker £1/kg stuff - 100ml of oats 150 ml of ss milk, and 50ml of water ish...in the microwave for 2:30mins then the fun begins

I add raisins and honey/maple syrup...or a fruit, nut and berry mix or just a banana, be creative...by the time you've added stuff to it it doesn't really matter what oats you're using :)

If you can't be rsed with doing it yourself...try the dorset cereals porridge, with berries or apple and saltanas...I used to sprinkle a few chopped almonds or nuts on the top to give them a bit of texture, but very tasty...tho the quaker/raisin/honey mix is loads cheaper.

  • Try the powershake that I discovered accidentally but it is yummy and filling and healthy!

3/4 a pint of milk (whatever kind you like - I actually use soya milk cos it is proper tasty.)
Chuck in a banana. (This is great for using up blackened or mushy bananas that you would normally chuck out)
Chuck in a handful of porridge oats.
I also add some almonds or peanuts to give it a bit of crunch!

Then use a hand blender or regular blender to mush it up. You can even microwave it for a minute or so to warm it up in the cold winter mornings.

    Drink / eat and enjoy!
Keep it locked or be distressed!
