im trying to get fitter for the lakeland loop in april for the hill climbing, when i go on long rides at weekends i tend to keep on the big front chainring and now when i climb hills i have it on the small front chainset but find it hard keeping up with the extra candence, should i be spinning more maybe on the middle chainring when im on the flat and only use the large front chainring for going downhill, it just seems to be using a lot of energy spinning and not going any faster then on the bigger ring

Looks to me like your changing down to a too low a gear by jumping to the small ring.
The idea is you ride at same cadance if possible, changing down when necessary as you start to struggle on the higher gear.
I presume your changing gear on the rear also? :D
