Would this include Gold, Silver & Bronze performance awards.

No. Having thought about it a bit more now, the standards are actually the best way of measuring your success. However without timing, I how would I know how far above or below the standards I was?
So how do you explain the popularity of PBP or Londo to Paris? Put up signs and people (not just, and mostly not racers) wil come. I sure half the reaso wht sportives are so popuar is that they are not hardcore races, its all about perception. Doesnt stop us club riders making a race of it, but not explicitly, as that is what will kill it.

Easily. There are lots of other non-timed events that are popular too.

You both misunderstand my point. I don't want racing as such, nor to attract racers. I just want a reliable measure of my success (or not!). If your goal is something other than to get the best time possible for yourself, that's fine too. I'm not a racer, just someone who likes to push myself to my limits. There are plenty of people much stronger than me out there. Edit: I also enjoy the social aspect of Sportives too.
