General question about Turbo Trainers

How noisy are turbo trainers?
I do not have a garage so it will be used in my kitchen.. dont want to annoy the wife too much!!
Also which one would you suggest.. I have about £100 to spend.
Also does it shread rear tyres?

    Magnetic ones dont make too much noise. You should also get a rubber mat to go underneath, that will reduce noise and stop it moving.

    Rear tyres should not shred - if they do it means the wheel is not being gripped enough by the turbo - so tighten, however they do wear out, so use up tyres that are near the end of their life or have cuts on them that you wouldnt want to be on the road with. I keep my old tyres just for this.

    Go for a Kurt Kinetic Road Machine... fluid based trainer that is very quiet and gives an excellent work out. My tyre is still intact after a year's worth of use.

    What do I ride? Now that's an Enigma!
  • All the fluid trainers are pretty quiet - your chainset will make more noise. I have a cycleops fluid2 which is inaudible in an adjacent room.
