the advantages if any of riding a heavy bike into the wind? Just asking cos my 30 mile daily commute is spent chewing my bars and blowing my legs apart trying to get above 14mph!

Was just hoping there was some benefit to the soul destroying constant hacking?

  • Bike weight on the flat doesn't matter much, unless that bike makes you substantially less aerodynamic.

If you have hills then it will slow you down a bit. No advantage in that for training unless you are trying to make the hills last longer. Otherwise just ride faster for the same training benefit.

On a crappy wet day, the old bike might be a better option to save the wear and tear on the good bike.

Riding into a strong headwind is a pig and really depressing when you see your speedo showing 14 mph and you know it could be 20mph  The only advice i would have is make sure you are aerodynamic as pos. No baggy sleeves or trousers and low handlebars or on the drops, if you've got them, certainly helps a bit, but i suspect you already know this. I suppose the main advantage is it's a bit like hitting yourself on the head with a hammer - its great when you stop
