Do you wear all that at the one time?

Where in Canada are you? I cycled with some Quebequois and they told me that it gets down as low as -50C. I can't imagine cycling at that temperature.

It wouldn't be tights that you need. Three-bar electric socks, gloves, undercrackers and an extra layer, or 2, of porrage at least! :)

Usually, I'm told, they opt for spin classes or change to speed skating on the Ridau (sp?) canal.

-3 to -13C in Ottowa today and it's only November!

  • Whats the word on the street on the new Altura Reflex bib tights? I'm considering getting them as a Crimbo pressie from the Mrs.

I've posted a note in the C+ office section - but not had a reply, so hopefully someone here will be able to help. One of the guys at work is after some winter tights, but he's got a 36" inside leg (if not longer!!) and a 34" waist!! Any ideas where he can get something that won't stop over his ankles and look like 3/4's??!!??

Also, in answer to a previous note about what to wear on a club run - don't bother wearing baggy short over your winter tights, that will attract the funny looks!! Better to go with either just tights (with short underneath for extra comfort) or tights with shorts over the top to show off club colours. I heard a while ago that the 2nd option was something that was out of fashion / a no no, but to be honest it looks no different to wearing leg warmers or most of the club winter kit that is available!!

Finally ALWAYS go for the bib option, not only do they stay up better and not leave a gap between the top and bottom half (which will get cold!!) but they also make sure there is an extra layer over the kidneys / lower back.

  • Up here, in Iceland, I am currently using Endura Stealth tights. Those are water and windproof and have enough insulation for most weather. It's your torso and head that you have to be careful about...

Crapaud: oh yeah! all at once! I'm in Quebec and it does get to -50C with wind chill. Riding outside in that temperature is suicide, but it's still manageable at -15 or -20. The hardest thing is keeping the feet warm. I've got extra-loose neoprene booties so I can have one or two pairs of wool socks with cleat holes in them over my summer cycling shoes. And you really want a 'cross bike for the snow. It takes quite some motivation sometimes.

Keep this in mind for those winter days when you lack motivation to get out.

Go for thermal bibs. Endura are good. DHB are good value. Try wiggle.
