I have a theory that you shouldn't weigh yourself. What should matter is if your clothes don't fit properly. As far as Gatby wanting to be 11 stone - why? Eleven's just an arbitary number. If you counted in kg or pounds you would pick another number as long as its round. Don't think in terms of numbers. Its flawed logic.I have pain!0

i THOUGHT THE IDEA WAS TO BE NOT ROUND.....If only the legs were as good as the bike....0 -
I only want to lose weight to be able to climb faster. I am a stone overweight, and am struggling to shift it, despite racing all year and doing a reasonable amount so far this winter. I am not going to give up living and breathing though just to do it, beer and wine is just far to good to give up.0
-
10 is a round number but is way to low (been there it broke me) but 11 is a skinny number!
I know how you feel, its just a number a weight that I know I'll be happier at cos that last layer of fat is gone and everything jus feels tighter and lighter. BUt like you say I'm not going to give up the things I enjoy to get there as(not yet anyway) I've sacrificed enough as it is,
Gats0 -
Do watch your lower weight - what looks like a bit of flab may be just a slight tone up needed.
I was just over 14st (90kg's) in January, having not cycled as much as I should for a number of years (work commitments). Started back cycling regularly after work and weekends but just didn't shift the weight - got fit, but not lighter. Changed jobs in July, still 90kgs to one I could commute to - only 8 miles each way, and also cut out the crap/over eating.
Got to 80kg's (12.5st) by the end of September and that remained flat for about a month - it's now dropped to 77kg - just over 12st and don't want to loose much more - I'm 5'9" and my race weight 10 years ago was 12-12.5 stone, so I'm about there. 13kg's of weight - that's two £5000 road bikes ......
Nothing major on the diet - just porridge/wheatabix for breakfast, sandwiches for lunch, lots of fruit and normal healthy tea. Changing the lunch from say a ready meal, cutting out birthday cakes, trips to the 'chippy' once a week for lunch to just sandwiches has made a big difference., as well as the twice a day riding at a high pace to/from work.
The only problem is that instead of bike gear on my Christmas list, it's civvy clothes - nothing fits anymore....argh !!! Rather have bike stuff.......
6" and 11 stone is skinny.
Well done to everyone for the weight loss...0 -
yeah 6ft and 11 stone is skinny but its also light and healthy whereas 11.5 and 6ft is just that bit too flabby. At the moment I'm having soup and rice cakes for lunch so I reckon I'm gonna just have the soup from now on and see what happens and then if there's no change start culling elsewhere.
Gats0 -
here Gats, your 6 foot and 11.5 stone right. I'm 5 ft 8 and weight in at a fraction under 12 stone.I think of myself as thin , I have a good sixpack and very little excess bodyfat. Don't see you being overweight mate. Try asking a few trusted friends and colleagues of their opinions, think you'll find you look great to the vast majority of them.0

Please no. You ended up selling all your bikes last time didn't you? FFS, I'm a couple of inches taller than you and I weight 4 stone more. I could do with losing some, not you!
You're exercising a lot and your weight is fairly stable. Just leave it. Please.Fckin' Quintana … that creep can roll, man.0 -
I'm in for the club.
I'm 48 years old Weighed 21 stone 5 pounds on my birthday, (August 20th, thank you for asking.) Got a bike, (Decathlon triban trail. 150 Euros, big and comfy THIS ONE ) Did 50 miles a week till end Oct, Now doing 70.
Now weigh 20stone 3 pounds.
Only drinking 1 night a week, eating more healthily and losing weight steadily. Still got a long way to go though. Set a target of 15 stone to get myself a good bike. Maybe next birthday.
Cheers

iainf72 - yeah a couple of years ago things got a bit nuts with the onset eating disorder and s drop in weight to just over 9.5 stone and my body just eating itself basically. The selling of the bikes was so hard aswell especially considering the Scott CR1 ltd I was building never actually even got ridden. Broke my heart so dont wanna be there again. Its a personal thing I would be happy at 11 I think.
I do believe that the body is a complex thing so doing many miles and not eating much will force your body to hold onto its fuel sources more emphatically. the best way is to eat small and often with all the good stuff. I eat like peanut does - very similar diet in fact but I allow myself the occasional treat like two biscuits in the evening and once a week a muffin and cappuccino cos otherwise what the hell is the point? In order to ride well you have to eat well if you take care of what you put into your body, your body will take care of how it uses it.
I'm now looking into doing a course in sports nutrition to learn more as I dont fully understand it but am damned if I'm gonna get another eating disorder (or make this one worse!)

Hey Magibob,
Good luck, I was like you July last year (2006) I weighed in at 21stone, aimed to lose 6 stone by my wedding by cycling and diet.
I now weigh 12 stone 7lbs, cycle 10-15 miles per day and love it, good luck.
Now if only I had the money to purchase that new bike?!?!?!0 -
offset the money you save on eating and buying less food on the price of a new ride!

blimey Sarge  you're an inspiration
You've lost more than a lot of folk weigh ! love to see the before and after.
I weighed 12.7 when I was 16 so thats probably my natural healthy weight but I'd have to stop eating altogether to get there. What was your daily intake in calories0 -
Before you ask no it wasn't starving myself,
Basically i set out at first to limit my calorie intake to between 1500-1700 per day, but limit my fat intake to less than 10g per day (extremely hard)
It involved lots of calculating but figured it would only be for a year or so.
I also set out to cycle at first 3-5 miles per day getting really out of breath, couple this with some weight training (so my arms didn't turn flabby)
Over time i've increased the excercise to 10 miles, then to 15 miles, and also trying to focus on doing these miles in a set time.
I started doing 10 mile TT style rides every night, initially taking me around 50 mins (yes slow but i was large) now i'm down to doing 10 miles in 27 mins which I think is pretty good, finishing off with a 5 mile slow down.
Calorie intake is now at around 2500 per day but I'm still limiting my fat intake to less than 20g per day as I definately don't want to go back to my original.
I also competed in the London to Brighton run this year and completed the 50ish or so miles in a respectible 4hrs 30 mins including the many traffic jams of bikes.
So to everyone who needs the good old kick up the backside, it can be done.
BTW I just turned 30 in October, and have never felt so good.0 -
That really is an inspiration Sarge well done.
I was contemplating going for a 5 mile ride (hilly) at 12am when the phone rang. My Ex had broken down with a flat battery ( having just blown up the Mondeo I lent her )
Just the excuse I needed!
Its tough when you are weak willed. Thats the reason I'm in the mess I am really. No will power.
Talking of calories. I have just done the same thing as you and have limited my calories to 1000 per day because of my back problem I cannot even walk so pounds pile on quicly.
I was just checking my low calorie lunch (I eat the same each day )and was amazed to find that it actually contained 250Kcals !!!!
I had assumed it was about 100 Kcals.
Just goes to show how easy it is to eat hidden calories.
My lunch ? well its a tin of Heinz Pea & Ham soup with 2x tablespoons of sweetcorn (roughage)
I'm going to have to find another lunch now ...
Well done for completing the L to B run. My Ex did it and she said it was tough and she was fit.!0 -

Woa, 1000 calories is probably too little to survive on in a day, and doing that will probably make you binge eat once you have finished your diet, not to mention the lack of vitamins/minerals (check with your doctor before doing anything that drastic)
try to cut out the extras you have in a day (choc bars, pints of beer etc, that extra biscuit)
Limit calories to around 500-700 less than a normal 2500 calories diet, limit fat intake (especially saturated fat to around 1/3rd of the total fat intake per day) weight loss should be about 1-2lbs per week on average.
Take it slowly, remember its probably taken you years to put the weight on, so it won't be overnight, and dont weigh yourself everynight.
Best advice of all, don't look for a getout clause, it better spending that hour per night cycling, rather than worrying what the future may bring.
It sound sad now, but before I lost the weight I couldn't even bring myself to think about excercising, now I'd rather excercise than eat that chocolate bar, although I can now treat myself once in a while.
Its also not embarassing buying clothes anymore, I now wear 34" jeans, medium tops, before it was the xxxl section in M&S.
Let us know how it goes, If you do well maybe a weight watchers L2B cycle ride in the coming years to celebrate.
Good Luck.0 -

On the other hand I've replaced some of my fat with muscle.0 -
my husband said I was "ripped"!! so who cares what the scales say0
-
I don't have weighing scales at home so I usually weigh myself when I visit my brother every few weeks.
For years I have been 14 - 15st. The last time I weighed my self, about 6 weeks ago, I was 14st (give or take), last weekend I was just under 13 stone.
I haven't been below 14st since I was about 12 years old (26 now BTW).
I have also dropped a trouser size from a 36/38 to a 34/36.
I also feel a lot more energetic now, and I've only been commuting for the last 6 months.
Now I just need to tone up my upper body a bit more.
Any recommendations for upper body excercises which don't involve going to the gym (they're so boring). Would swimming be a good thing to do, to tone up?
p.s. Congrats to everyone, especially BubblinSergeant -0 -
swimming is fantastic for upper body strength. I've only been swimming properly for a few months and can really see the difference in toned up arms (and little biceps  )0

you must be joking gats - you could not be considered fat in anyones book. For your height, you could be upto 13st 4lb and still be within your healthy range.
Don't be so hard on yourself.0 -
