Training after a cold

When should you commence training after a cold? I was in bed for three days last week with a pretty bad cold. I feel better now but have the remants of the cold hanging around - stuffed up, catarrh etc.

Am I safe to do some light training now or commence when all symptoms have gone completely?

The rule of thumb I've always worked too is that if the cold is above the neck then riding will do no harm, if it's below the neck, i.e. a chest cold, then don't ride.

Generally I think caution is sensible, especially at this time of the year when it's unlikely that a few days off will do you any harm (assuming you're not riding cross).

I commute by bike, so sometimes have to ride when under the weather. I find that just taking it easy in lower gears and avoiding breathless efforts is the way to go. It's actually quite liberating to ride without worrying about speed for a change! As AndyP says though, don't rush yourself.
  • Thanks guys. Time to take it easy and enjoy the ride. Good advice.
