Are tubulars too much hassle?

    Now tubulars are beginning to sound too much hassle again. I like the sound of the tape, but not the acetone cleaning. For the sake of a few 100g would I be mad to go to tubulars? Lucky I'm waiting for the January bargains.

    get them if you are only going to race on them. total mileage will be fairly limited, thus reducing the chances of a puncture. and they don't puncture as easily. i use mine in TTs and duathlons and have only punctured once ever on a tub (and that was while training :oops: ).

    It's not just the weight - the ride is lovely as well, that's why I used them for years even though I never actually raced, beyond the odd time trial for my own amusement. But these days there are nice gorgeous clinchers from Veloflex and others, that are so lovely anyway that I don't really miss tubs. Also, I think nice HPs are about the same "niceness" to ride as crap tubs - though I admit I've lost touch with what's available these days so perhaps ignore that!

    PS I never found the glueing a huge hassle - I used to clean most of it off with a metal edge (back of a knife) holding it at such a shallow angle that it didn't take any aluminium off the rim, often by spinning the wheel with the bike on a work stand, then I'd clean the last bit with solvent. The only pain was when replacing a tyre during a ride, then forgetting to re-glue it when back home, then this happening again therefore 3rd tyre going on same lot of dried up glue - and eventually the scene described above where I went skidding on my face at 40mph. But that's down to me being an idiot, not a point against tubs. When someone invented tub tape this became a thing of the past cos I took that along with the spare tyre.
