I'm totally new to mountain biking, so Iv pretty much no idea where to start, I have an old Giant at the moment, I was in my local Halfords looking at GT iDirve XCR 5, looks like a real bit of kit, and from what Iv read it sounds good, has anyone any thoughts on the bike?? or recommendations of another bike?? I'm not too fussed on hard tail or full sus. Any words of wisdom would be a big help.

Its very good value. What is your riding style and terrain? Its more of a all mountain bike for rougher trails than an XC bike.0

Id like to do a bit of everything. living so close to the Dublin mountains I kinda have a chance to do it all. Im from Ireland by the way. And work for halfords (not bikehut) so staff discount on the bike too . But anyone used the iDrive XCR??0
-
Not used it, but a big Idrive fan - though do test it out. Ideal bike for an allrounder.0
-
Halfords (in ROI anyway) aint keen on letting you test ride the bikes, other than on the shop floor and thats not much use.... I think Im going to get the bike anyway coz I read the review on this site and it sounds good, is it worth getting clip peddles?? or should i say on flats??0
-
Always start on flats until you get used to the bike. Do at least sit on it in the shop - you need to make sure the geometry suits you and it fits.0

I'ved a look at the bike Radar review and noticed a couple of changes to the current sepc, are these for better or worse?
Fork: Was Rockshox Recon U-turn/Now:Suntour Epicon 140mm
Cranks: Were Truvativ Blaze/Now: Truvative Isoflow
Gears and the like: Were Shimano Deore LX /Now: Suntour SX5 27spd
Brakes: Were Hayes/ Now Tektro IO's with 180mm front rotor (Cable??)
Would this new spec detract from the 4.5 rating the bike originally recieved?0 -
The spec has been totally raped for 2008. The old one, still available is light years ahead. Another Halfords ploy.0
-
Just what I thought, doubt it'll still be available in April when I'll have enough cash to buy one.
Have seen an 2007 I-Drive 5 1.0 for not alot more on winstanleys website0 -
The current bike I think is mis labeled any are are still offering the recon shox ect in newport, wales anyway.
The 2008 is way better speced with juicy 3 brakes better wheels and better rims. xt shadow mech ect. and all in black.
I even got pictures of the new bike so the 2008 is looking way better and due to be released first week in december.0 -
wahey0

2007 has the recon, as tested by whatMTB earlier in the year. 2008 has the Epicon. The is the one to get if you can. XCR version that is.0
-
Trust me it doesnt
I have the pics and full spec which came from halfords and gt.
The 2007 is a blue gt which states it has suntour epicon, which is an error on the website.
The 2008 is in black with juicy brakes and recon 351 and ario 2.1 shox.
If you dont belive me i will gladly e-mail you pic and specs. i dont know were you are getting info from supersonic? trust me I deal with halfords very close and I know whats up.
and the 2008 is 899.99 same as last years blue one.
............................................................................................................................
anyway if i were you i would wait for the focus super bud in wiggle.co.uk it looks 10x the bike with 10x the spec for an extra 100.00 available in jan 20080 -
Well a friend of mine reckons it has been tested for the next MBUK and got slated. I agree the Halfords website is crap!0
-
If you have powerpoint on your computer i will send you the specs.
It even says new 2008 gt xcr5
and have spoke to chris in shipping who has ordered the bike.
Trust me the bike does not and will not have suntour on it.
Ill bet my wife on it,,,, i mean life
Last year the bike got 8/10 what mountain bike of the year award
this year it will be 10/10, it looks sweet.0 -
Looks like someone has been telling me porkies lol.0

Getting from the point?? anyway The halfords branch I work in (biggest in ROI) got 1 2008 GT the other week, its an Aggressor XC2 and it has Suntour (I know coz I built it), I havent see the i drive or anyother one for that matter, so not sure if it has suntour, but beeing the "trainee bike guy" Ill let you know what the spec is on any GT halfords do and I got the 07 thismornig and OMG! what a bike, just back from a 10Km ride and its a really good bike, only thing is Im not happy wiht the gear hanger. its a load of balls!! but i like it all the same. cool bike.0
-
Whats up with the gear hanger?!0
-
Have you see it??? its about 3 inches long!! and like E60 (£40 sterling) to replace!! where as other GT gear hanger are only E20, but that is the only fault I have with the bike, other than that its a really good bike, love it.0
-
Thats ridiculous, 40 quid?!!! They cost about 10 pence to make! I must get down and see the new 2008 stuff.0
-
well we here in I reland wont have the full range of 08s till 2nd week in December, but all branches in the UK will have them next week!! this is what im told by halfords head office, and from my 2 weeks in bikehut, iv found that you have to add 5-7 days to what they say. So dont hold your breath to see them.0
-
Aye, I used to work for them for two years.0
-
did you work in bikehut?0
-
It was just as they were all changing way back in 2000. Our store was ready to go, but I left.0
-
The GT 2008 was going to be my bike, thought how can I go wrong for 899.00
Recons, juicy brakes, xt shadow, and ario 2.1 shock.
But halfords kept messing me around saying next week next week bla bla bla
So i thought to myself, by the time they get into shop and x-mas arrives I might as well wait for the Superbud from wiggle.co.uk
Plus im not using the bike for downhill or heavy duty use.
So thought to myself will save 10lbs on the bike and wait until jan.
If you want me to send you specs and pics of the 2008 XCR5 just PM me and i will send via email, you need power point to open the docs though.0 -
Ah, dont have powerpoint. Bugger.0
-
lol, was going to aks was your branch one of the ones you read all the horror stories about on the web? but if its been 8 years I wont bother.0
-
The store was one of the best in its region, with large sales volumes, but was crippled by their inabilty to recruit decent staff and piling everything on my head. Fed up of sorting others mistakes out and having to sell 80 quid bike!0
-
