Eating, before or after training, does it really matter.

I am a long time cyclist aged 44 weight 82Kg stocky build. I cycle 10 miles to work in the morning and then 10 miles home again in the evening.I do not eat anything before riding. From about March till end October i also ride in the evening. So i arrive home from work after my 10 mile ride, average speed about 33kmh, i then change and take my other racing bike out and do another 40 to 50 Km around 10 to 15 minutes later, again i never eat before going out, my average speed in the evening is 34.4Km for the whole of last summer. However my evening bike is a full carbon Campag equiped and much lighter than my work bike, but my question is does it really matter if you eat before going out rather than when you come back. I never feell hungry when i have cycled. but i do drink plenty of fluids to compensate..I have in the past eaten before cycling but find no improvement in my performance.

Hi.
For those distances you do not really need to eat before riding.
I normally make sure I eat if I am going to do about 40 miles and above.
The only obvious time not to eat is just before going to bed0 -
It all depends on how hard you are going to ride.
A lot of club runs have cake stops and it never seems to affect the riders too much. I've seen some have a full english and of course you need to eat on the bike on ride over 2.5 hours or so of non stop riding.
If you are going to do some interval training then I would not eat too much before hand and if possible allow 2 hours after you have eaten a main meal.0 -
As a rough guide anything thats over RPE 6/7 or 80% MHR is best done on a relatively empty stomach, otherwise its likely to end up messy....0
