Do you intend to race CX? I built a 'cross bike this summer with the intention of racing and took the plunge last month. So far I have only done 2 races but have really enjoyed them. The thing about CX is that races only last for an hour so going out on long 4 hour sunday training rides is not really the best preparation. I am now doing more hill running and xc mtbing than road riding - just going out for an hour or so at very high intensity - and it pays off. If your main interest is road riding and you don't want to compete in CX then i reckon just get a decent winter training bike (if you haven't already got one) and stick to that. And if you want to get off road then get an MTB as they are more versatile.

IMO, only get a 'cross bike if you want to race 'cross. They are not the versatile bikes that some people make them out to be: they can be difficult to fit mudguards to and probably lack rack mounts so do not make for an ideal commuting or touring bike. Also, it you intend to use it as a training bike and a 'cross bike then you'll need an extra set of wheels or you'll be forever changing tyres, which is a right pain.

Just be honest about what you want the bike for. If you want a winter trainer, then get a winter trainer but if you want to race CX then go for it - it's ace!
I'm only concerned with looking concerned
  • s'good fun, very social at the races. Fun at all levels of fitness tbh. It IS hard on equipment though so it's not a cheap option but there is a lot to recommend it. beats flailing yourself to death on a turbo if nothing else.
