56 mph descending the Simplon Pass. I knew I was going quite quickly but it was a buttock clenchingly scary moment when I happened to glance down at my cycle computer.

One of the guys I was with shot past me shortly afterwards - he must have been doing 60 mph.

    What a blast... :D

did you pay homage to the great man on the way up?
  • Anyone know what system Jan used to get those nice graphs produced? I take it that it's a bike computer that you can upload data from to a PC?

I used Ascent -- it works really well with all the Garmin bike GPSs; though it is an Intel binary, it only runs on OS X.

36 mph, Knights Hill West Norwood. Felt fast, but to put it in perspective, at the recent ToB Prologue at Crystal Palace on a short ("undulating") course they were AVERAGING 38-39 mph.

Down Beckenham Hill i've rocked in at 45.6... it was clear and wind behind me etc... just made me think "if I stack it, I'll be skinned alive"

I'm not realising I've never really gone balls out on the flat... but I' know I've down 26.something using someone else as a pace maker (not drafting)

My best commute was an avg of 19mpg (I take the comp off going through greenwich tunnel as that doesn't count) but more normally it's 16-18 and about 1mph less on the way home

That's about the same as a big 4X4 isn't it?

  • 40.3mph on a 20" folder on Lodge Hill, Liskeard, Cornwall... Wheee..!
    All i wanna do is...
  • 37.5 mph down Daisy Nook in Failsworth. Twisty road and if straight maybe could get a bit more but I think I'd chicken out before the bike!
  • Best so far is 47mph coming down A643 from Morley to Howden Clough, only problem is that it changes to a 30 limit at the bottom and all the cars start to brake....

On my old MTB with 1.6" slicks I could only get to 42 mph on the same hill, shows the difference a proper road bike (Giant SCR2) makes :D

40mph is pretty easy round here with all these lovely hills, and something has to compensate for going up the buggers.....
  • Hi

My wife keeps on doing 71mph and I was doing 16mph at the same time.... I think she's cheating! (or needs a new computer).

If I peddle and have a north easterly I can do 47 on my way to work but it is a bit steep then I'm make to a very sedate pace.

Average is around 17mph and goes down a bot on longer rides. Top speed is 30, I can't seem to get to 40 just yet :x

I did go out on a hot day during the summer (yes, there was a summer but only just!) and the computer told me that my top speed was 65mph  Sadly I think that they sun had got to it and it went a bit loopy

The 40.4mph was in a 30mph limit area, so I guess I was being a bit naughty,

Not really, speed limits don't apply to cycles.

If you were cycling "furiously" though, they can get you on that.
  • my top speed on my racer is 32 mph avarge 16mph im only 14
