How stupid can some people be? I'm doing 30mph in a 30 limit this morning when I hear a car peeping, I establish it's not the car behind me, after a few more hoots I realise it's the car behing he car behind me! going around a small round about he cuts me off, stops and screams "get to the side of the road" I say "It's a 30mph limit" He screams again "F**k off, and get to the side of the road" he the speeds off. Now I've been cycling this part of London for years now and realise a short cut where I know I will catch him so I can get his number plate. I had to hang about for ages, but he eventually apeared and I got his work name and number off the side of the van. I called his HR department and it turns out his HR manager's husband is a cyclist as well, so she knows all about it, I hope she really sh*ts on him from a great height!!!!

Rant over.

Was the road ahead of you clear? If so, that might be what angered the driver.

but it was a 30mph zone and this chap was doing 30mph...

if this was a motorcyclist doing 30mph would the guy in the van have been so inconsiderate? prob not. what's the difference?

Well the road was clear, but only for a few hundred yards and then there was the usual mile or two tail back. I wasn't even that far out. I think he was more hacked off that the car directly behind me hadn't felt the need to overtake. I would say he wasted far more time in stopping to shout at me.

Fair enough, EMD. I wasn't suggesting you were in the wrong btw.
  • Pity no witness to dangerous driving? That would sort the loon.
  • Another great solution I've found in this sort of situation is to get your phone out and take a picture of the car. It seems to really scare drivers and I guess would give a bit more substance to your claims should you ever pursue the matter. I've never taken it further, but have been meaning to set up a website featuring a gallery of bad drivers for a long time now.
  • At the end of the day he shouldn't be driving and swearing out of the window anyway, especially if he's meant to be representing the company. If one of my staff was doing that then I'd go mad because it's my name on the side of our vans!

Good man, hope he gets a right bollicking and won't be so cocky and agressive next time. Far too many drivers show lack of consideration to others on the road.
  • Well done EMD.

What about naming them on here and giving them some negative publicity or is that against forum rules.

Can you clarify that your speedo / cycle computer is fully calibrated and accurate?

Do it! It would be a winner. So many of us have phone cameras or helmetcams that you'd have no shortage of material.

BTW, yesterday I was going up the bus lane on Finchley Road in heavy traffic when a car suddenly cut in front of me and sped (I'd say 40 mph) up to the next light about 300 yards ahead (he wasn't turning left though!). When I caught up with him and looked in the passenger window, lo, he was on his mobile!

I suggested he had just broken 3 laws simultaneously and got the proverbial stream of abuse back. Now there's someone who needs to be named and shamed

From experience, yes he probably would.

    Just sayin'. 8)

Yes all is working correctly. I hoped that I would have heard something by now, I'm considering calling them back, as I can see them "leaving me to calm down a bit".

Where did you get it calibrated? I'd like to get mine done.
  • Hi,

You local council should have a "measured mile" that you can use to check your speedo.

    1 minute = 60mph - But be careful if it's in a 30mph limit!

Incidentally vehicle speedos have to read 3-10% fast, I had do the calcs/test some for a manufacturer I worked for a few years back.

  • It never required calibrating. I know it's working correctly by working out distances/durations/average speeds, these match my computer readings, so need for calibration!

Actually, what you just described is a form of calibration.

    Legally, it's 0-10%.
3-10% will be that specific manufacturers specification.

Matts got this one. I can remember a lecture with an 'Type Approval' lecturer from Manchester, whilst at SHU. (Degree had summat to do with cars - Not done much with cars since.)

Yes but speedo accuracy / calibration is not part of an MOT test, so who knows what their speedo is telling them. Which was the point of my post.....

    Legally, it's 0-10%.

    Actually legally it's:

For all true speeds of between 25 mph and 70 mph (or the maximum speed if lower), the difference between the indicated speed and the true speed shall not exceed -
    V/10 + 6.25 mph
where V = the true speed of the vehicle in mph.

    http://www.opsi.gov.uk/si/si2001/20010025.htm#sch3 (point 19)

So below 25 mph forget accuracy, and where a speedo reads 40mph, the true speed can be anywhere between just over 30 and 40mph!

    HTH - Rufus.
  • I was looking for The Road Vehicles (Construction and Use) Regulations 1986, which I believed applied but it doesn't seem to be online.
I found the Northern Ireland version, but that doesn't mention the accuracy? :?
