I currently do not have a heart rate monitor nor have I ever used one.My new position at work allows me a flexible schedule with my own choice for starting times.I am an early riser so this has greatly increased the time I can spend on my bike.Would it be a good idea for me to get one? Where could I get information on how to properly use one and what should I expect to spend?

Do a google on Heart Rate Training, plenty of resources out there...

You can spend as little as £15 for a basic HR Monitor ( Decathlon ) way up into the hundreds for ones that allow you to download the data into your Computer.

I personally use a Garmin Forerunner 305, great piece of kit, although far more than just a HR monitor...
