  • I never said the guy was a 'dick' just that his story is very creative! Just read the bit about his handlebars! Anyway dannygcp what are you some kind of social worker !
  • I didn't say you called him "a dick" - that was another poster.

My point was there is no point in just slagging off someone who is clearly very mixed up, and seems to be having a genuinely bad time at home (much of which he may well have brought upon himself).

And no I am not a social worker, I work in IT, but happen to care about what happens to other human beings.
  • your a dick

Well I guess that makes you either a bigger dick or a pussy?
  • There has been some pretty negative comments here. Its not about being a 'social worker', its about treating someone who's come here for an outlet, as much as for the advice, a friendly hand in life.

Slagging the poor guy off isn't going to help him out. If you think he's a dck or whatever, just cool your boots and don't type it.

    become a postman.

Then your shift will be over by early afternoon and you will have plenty of time to train later in the day.
    Example: http://rmg.i-grasp.com/fe/tpl_royalmail ... wznnbhpmsv

You will also earn enough money to supprot youself and get a bike on finance. About £40 a month for a great bike, for example:
    http://www.wiggle.co.uk/ProductDetail.a ... eam%20Bike

An additional bonus would be that the hours you are at work you will be on a bike anyway (even if it is for 5 minutes at a time)

ive asked, and i need to be over 18 and beable to work hours during college times, i really cant... as i wont get the qualifications i rly desperately need.

Where are you going to study?
If your going to uni surely you will get accomodation there?
First year students are guarenteed that.
They should also have social wlefare officer to advise you about claims.
Once you sort that out you can begin to think about getting back riding :D

These are the two choices for clubs:
    http://www.manxroadclub.com/
    http://www.manxvikingwheelers.com/index.htm

There's also http://www.juniorcyclingiom.co.im for youth cycling, but it's probably too junior – the organiser is very good though and may be a source of advice about acquiring a suitable cheap bike or entry level events for youth riders.

Joining a club (and cycling in general) is not an alternative to living in the real world though. Success in anything is usually the result of a multitude of small steps over time rather than one particularly significant moment. After all, most people never win the lottery.

One thing that nobody has suggested (probably because it's a long shot!) is to try and get yourself along to the Manchester Velodrome and get put through the paces by a British Cycling talent spotter - I know they test young athlete's from cycling and other sports to see if they have what it takes to get on the World Class Performance Program. Lottery funding has helped a number of current British riders (Wiggins & Cavendish both started out this way I think).

Contact British Cycling and find out if it's possible to put yourself forward for a "talent test". You'll soon find out if you really have what it takes to make in cycling.

    Just noticed this thread-

Maturity award goes to Fatboyslack, and by looking at your profile it's good to see what a valuable contribution you've made to the forum.

I've got a friend of mine who's working a full time 40 hour a week job + doing an open university degree.

If you do a degree while working then you can get a government grant to cover course costs (as he has done even though he's living at home). Have a look at all of the grants you can get from the government and make sure you're getting all of them!

If you're in full time education there are usually a whole load you can get- for me in Wales last year I got an Educational Maintenance Grant that came to £30 a week! :D
That can quite easily buy you some decent bike kit.

If you want to go pro you've got to get linked in with the whole cycling world.
Chat to your LBS about local clubs, and they are usually very seasoned roadies so have good advice on how to take things further. Also if they start to like and know you- they can give you heads up on any of last years models they may have lying around or give you discounts.

Track sessions are a great idea as it immediately puts you in touch with BC coaches and talent scouts, you can rent a bike each session- good for training and technique as well.

Spend the rest of this year- getting a job and patching stuff up with your parents. Then come January get a BC membership and racing license. Get back into training in January and enter as many hill climbs/Time trials/Road Races/track races as you can next season- expect to do badly the first few times but then you can start to see whether you enjoy and are good at it.

If you do well then chat to the BC people about how motivated you are (or seem to be!) and how much you'd like to take cycling 1 step further.

All the races are done this year, so spend the next few months working hard at everything else- get on the bike if you can but concentrate on the rest of your life.

    Good luck! :D

  • oh thank you All for all the advice, its so much appreciated, because i live in my own lil world... i couldn't see the options available. and you've opened my eyes. thank you so much.
i've managed to get an old bicycle working. my college wont help me financially with a grant... or anything really. because i'm under age and just started my course just a few days earlier than when i turned 18... so missed out on those benefits unfortunately.
social workers have got in touch with my parents. and i'm out and leaving home completely. i'm just doing all the things i can which will make life a lil easier... like stash food, money, bits and pieces,
and around all of this ive managed to find the time to get my daily cycling in:) using a bicycle i found near some recycle bins. the chain fitted on nicely. and my clip on pedals/shoes i got as a gift a few months ago have been saints. the best bit about my cycling. so the 30-90mile cycles ive done every day have left me so happy. my names all over the island ''looking for any job'' to fit around course.
and i think things are looking brighter. the sleep in the park wasn't so bad either. because it has been 'ok' weather. and i sleep easily. lol the only down side is turning up to college in the same pair of cloths 3times!.
but now social worker benefit people are going to pay for my living expenses starting on the 1st of October. between now and then il focus on my cycling, and making as much money possible... because i don't know how hard it will be to live in a 1bedroom flat paying rent.... i don't know how much the bills will be so... I'm going to prepare as much as possible. my girl friend has helped allot. you have all helped allot. i just had a really down period thinking my life is coming to a close...
The college have been so helpful, cus left over food at the end of the day i get to have. so ive had plenty to eat, and so i'm getting the nutrition i need to get my legs strong etc... and my body isnt going to waist away from lack of food which i'm sooo happy about.
Once again. thankyou so much all for your advice, ive red and weighed up all the choices i might have, and fully appreciated the help. i hope i meet some of you in the future.
My name is Michael B. look out for this cyclist in the future :) because wtever happens i'm going to make it happen for myself, only live once, i always tell myself.

Write a budget and stick to it!!!!

Work out how much food costs and stuff and allocate money.
Chat to you social worker as they'll know all about things like this.

    Enjoy life! :D
