Some basic winter "sessions"

Just finished my first year on the road (at 40 years old) which started with me struggling to finish a 13 mile route (hilly mind you :D ) and got me to a 4hr50min for the Etape Caledonia (81 miles) which I was well pleased with.

I'm looking to have some plans through the winter to:

a) pick up my ave speed so i can join a club and not look a pillock
and
b) improve my climbing - see a)

Not sure if I'll gravitate to TT or road racing but just need to be a good bit quicker.

At the moment I can commute in to work 3 days a week on variable routes - 7, 13 and 18 mile with climbing, I can hit the turbo on other days and one long ride on Sundays.

I'm a creature of habit so a simple "Monday - Turbo 7 x 5min at 80% MHR" type would be great and I just do that every Monday I can.

Thanks in advance

  • Sounds like you'd be fine in a club already if you find the right club - most will do club runs or rides which provide a (relatively) gentle way into group riding. You can then progress on to training rides / chain gang etc if you feel confident in your increasing speed. Along the way you'll get lots of advice and help, and probably company on easier rides if you fancy it.
