Anybody got any recipes for an on-the-ride carb replacement drink?
I expect there could be a small drop of salt in there somewhere cos I sweat a lot.

50% smoothie juice and water with a pinch of salt
Any cordial mix with the salt added
50%coke/pepsi water0 -
Cheers!
I wouldn't have thought about 50% smoothie. And I'll check out the ingredients in pepsi/coke before trying that one(and I'll make sure it's flat first)0 -

I thingk that was a spate of TDF riders drinking diluted Cola.
I use 50:50 fruit juice and water though I've been informed that it (the fructose) takes longer to metabolise than sucrose.0 -
why bother when you can spend a little bit more and a lot less time and get something that has undergone sensible development and have a choice of flavours / strengths and emphasis
Is the time on your bike, your enjoyment of it, your performance, worth so little.0 -
What's your idea of "a little more"? Fruit juice is nowhere near as pricey as carb replace powders I've seen. Maybe I've not looked at bulk prices.0

I'd find it difficult to compare as I use High5 energy source 4+1 Carb/Protein drink for better endurance and recovery and therefore I'm not familiar with a pure carb drink
But I'd have thought that the pure carb version would cost about 50p more for a 2 hour ride (1.5 litres) based on an own brand OJ. My own experience wasn't great (energy wise) and I use about a pint in my post ride banana smoothie so it might all be a bit much.
I'm sure you'll have loads of people who'll give you good advice about making up alternatives but I find it far too easy to make a mix up from the powder, take addional powder to add to water, for long rides and riding say 10 hours a week, the buying and storage of all the OJ would wind me up, knowing that there was an easier way that was far more effective and would give me tangible recovery or performance benefits.0 -
PSP22 Original (100% Maltodextrin) 2.7kg - £22.00
10Kg Food grade Maltodextrin ~ £25
SIS in money for old rope shocker!0 -
Sounds a lot cheaper and more effective way of getting carbs than OJ though0

Yep, just not sure how SIS can get away with charging 4 times the price for a branded product, I guess in the same way people buy branded painkillers at silly prices when the unbranded version is exactly the same.0

where do you find 10kg for £25? That sounds a decent price!0

You can look at contents of others drinks and copy them.0 -
myprotein.co.uk is good place to buy DIY carb/recovery drink ingredients. I tend pour 3cm worth of Maltodextrin into the water bottle. add a tiny pinch of salt, a drop of Ribena (or similar), and then fill with water, give it a good shake, and volia, your energy drink is ready!0
