I have just got my shiny new bike in an attempt to get fit again after a few years of inactivity since the football career came to an end (i say career that may just be a little grandiose)
But anyway its just what targets should i be setting myself, in terms of distances and times and other than cycling what other exercises would compliment riding. I would like to join the local club but feel i have reach a certain standard before hand, i would hate to stare at loads of backsides in the far distance all the time

Depends how fit you are at the moment,
Try doing a few tests like a flattish 20 miler at normal speeds (not racing)
Then have a go at some longer rides like a 30 and 50 miler and then 100km (67 miles). Measure the times you get for these.
Try and get an average speed of 15mph- that'll put you in good stead for going on a club run where they average about 18-22mph but as it's in a group it's a lot easier."I hold it true, what'er befall;
I feel it, when I sorrow most;
'Tis better to have loved and lost;
Than never to have loved at all."
