Hi Old Welshman, a little known fact - there are actually public toilets at Crystal Palace I've used them quite a few times. They're down the bottom end of the park. Palace is not a purpose built cycling track, its the most exciting and hardest mid week crit, it requires a good skill level that even some very decent racers can't cope with, it requires numerous marshals unlike any other london crit and is well run by meaningful volunteers. For all that I pesonally think £10 just about covers it. Plus if you're lucky Jon from londoncyclesport might have you picture up on his forum :D Anyway if it was only a £5 for example all manor of jonny-just-bought-a-road-bike would be racking up to have a go this would probably result in quite a few crashes no doubt. Anyway the £10 thing is all relative. I bet there are things you'd happily pay a tenner for that others wouldn't
  • I think welshman has touched on the actual problem here himself.

Others I think have spelt out how £10 is actually cheap for all that'as involved in a bike race. My only comment there is that for this kinfd of mid week affair I think a mars bar or similar would be al thats need for a prize, so possible saving by cutting out the prizes.

But welshman points out the difficulty for bikers as against runners/ triathletes ect. He wants to race three times a week!!!. Your typical runner will ease of for over a week before a race, even a local 10k,. and would be happy to actually compete in just a few events a year. Same for triathletes.

The nature of cycling is that recovery is much quicker ( at least for short events) . and if your one of the fitter ones a bunch race can often end up easier than than your training. Therfore your ready and eager to race again almost the next day.

I do think BC needs to look at reducing their take from mid week training type events, but really the only answer for Old Welshman is to pay up or race less often and find a good club to go training with , our summer club runs end up pretty much like races and cost nowt.

With TLI II have been putting on evening road races with no prizes or facilities for a £2 members entry fee, but I couldn't do that in London.
