Which Turbo Trainer: Priority = quietest!

OK so it seems I've been talked out of getting a set of rollers cos they won't let me effectively do the main thing I want to use them for (intervals). SO, I want to get a decent turbo trainer, BUT it needs to be as quiet as possible as I'm hoping to buy a flat soon so I could be on top of someone and don't wanna be the neighbour from hell... or am I dreaming? Does such a thing exist??

If not, then what trainer? Ideally the cheaper the better, but could be tempted to spend more if it's genuinely worthwhile! :D

  • i have a tacx satori very quiet with a large resistance (low revs high power)and apparently the sirrius by tacx is also very quiet but not as much resistance and cheaper

Ooh, special offer on the Satori with backpack etc on Wiggle at the mo too...

How quiet? Washing machine or louder?...!!

My priority was also the quietest trainer as I live in a top floor flat and I have wooden floors, so I don't want to upset people with my training. The one I eventually went for was the Cycleops Fluid2.

  • I use a TACX swing - very happy with it but I put an extra piece of old cut out carpet under each of the two horizontal bars and a folded piece of carpet under the front wheel (to raise it up to level). These cut out most of the noise and vibration. Cuppa-1.gif

I have an Elite elastogel fluid which is very quiet, especially with the Continental turbo tyre. Howether it has only one setting so you might spin out doing intervals.

Kurt Kinetic Road Machine - fluid based trainer that is very quiet. No need to raise one's voice if you want to have a conversation whilst you are training with it. To make things even more quiet get one of those TACX floormats that help to dampen vibration along with a small lift for your front wheel as well (which actually helps riding position).

What do I ride? Now that's an Enigma!
  • I've just returned a Tacx Satori back to wiggle as the brazing on one of the legs broke whilst folding it up - it was only second time I'd used it since ordering last week.
  • does anyone have the CycleOps Magneto Trainer? They sell it as a set at wiggle (includes mat)- I need to replace a faulty trainer (see previous message)

Does it fold away? Is it durable? (brazing etc)

I also have Elite elastogel fluid trainer - very quiet - but intervals are very hard work - I have used in the Lounge while wife watches telly - but its not for indoors unless you want to lose half your body weight in sweat !
